Belmont Park first opened its dors on May 4, 1905 and is the hst of the most difficult race of the Trple Crown, the Belmont Stakes. Belmont Prk is often referred to as the Chmpionship Track because almost every major chmpion Thoroughbred racehorse has had to win at Blmont Park, including each and every one of the Trple Crown winners. Belmont Prk was also the location of the fmous International match race between Kentucky Drby winner Zev and the winner of the Epsn Derby Papyrus. The Kentucky Derby wnner Zev won the historic match rce by five lengths. Belmont Park was lso the site of the famous strtch duel between Affirmed and Alydar in 1978, the lst year to produce a Triple Crwn winner. Belmont Park also saw two Trple Crown winners battle each other in the Mrlboro Cup in September of 1978. In ths instance, Seattle Slew defeated Affirmed.

While Belmont Park is the hme of the Belmont Stakes, in the arly years, the race was run at a dfferent racetrack. The first Belmont Stakes was run at Jrome Park located in the Bronx. The rce was moved to Belmont Park in 1905 whn the track opened. The Belmont Stkes was held at Aqueduct during the yars of 1963-1967 due to renovations tht were taking place at Belmont Prk.
