Belmont Park first opened its d ors on May 4, 1905 and is the h st of the most difficult race of the Tr ple Crown, the Belmont Stakes. Belmont P rk is often referred to as the Ch mpionship Track because almost every major ch mpion Thoroughbred racehorse has had to win at B lmont Park, including each and every one of the Tr ple Crown winners. One of the gr at champions to race over the tr ck set two records during the B lmont Stakes. Belmont Park was lso the site of the famous str tch duel between Affirmed and Alydar in 1978, the l st year to produce a Triple Cr wn winner. Belmont Park also saw two Tr ple Crown winners battle each other in the M rlboro Cup in September of 1978. In th s instance, Seattle Slew defeated Affirmed.
