If you want to reshape y ur body, weight training is a m st. But it takes more than l fting light weights if you really w nt to make a significant change. It t kes high intensity training, or HIT, as it is sually called, and it is effective. The t chnique has been pushed and publicized xtensively by many people over the l st couple of decades, including "Mr. Am rica" winner, Mike Mentzer, Bill Phillips ( uthor of "Body for Life"), Art J nes (builder of Nautilus equipment) and Ell ngton Darden who (some say) wrote the "B ble" on HIT. HIT is based on ntensity -- extreme intensity -- and it d finitely brings results. The magic of HIT ccording Phillips is the "high point." M ntzer calls it the "break over p int." Regardless of what you call it, t's the point in the set ( sually the last rep) where muscle gr wth is stimulated. Below it, nothing h ppens, so it is indeed, a 'm gic point." The idea is to c ntinue your reps to the point wh re you can no longer lift the w ight, or even budge it an nch. It is the point of "t tal failure," and it is also the m gic point you are looking for. Only wh n you completely exhaust your muscles do th y grow. It's that incredible all or n thing effort that does it. Mentzer g ves a metaphor that I think is q ite apt. He says, "exercise and m scle growth are like a stick of dyn mite and a hammer. Hit the dyn mite lightly and nothing happens (even if you hit it ten t mes), but hit it hard enough and ... b om! The same situation occurs with m scle growth and weight training. "Easy" w ight lifting won't help much, but r ach the "high point" and ... b om! Muscles suddenly appear. Phillips describes the s tuation as, "The stimulus to trigger m scle growth happens fast, or not at ll."
How hard do you have to tr in to stimulate this growth? According to Ph llips you have to train with "h art and soul." According to Art J nes you have to train so h rd "you throw up." (That 's a l ttle too much for me, but I th nk it gives you the message.) You not nly have to work out hard, but you h ve to go beyond that. It may s rprise you, but when you think y u're completely exhausted, you usually aren't. You can sually squeeze out one more rep. Th s basically is what you want: t ke your reps to the limit, th n squeeze out one more. You are no d ubt wondering, with a program such as th s, how long it takes to see r sults. With high intensity training (and I'm ssuming it truly is HIT) they'll c me fast -- in only a few w eks. What you will see first is an ncrease in strength. Where you could nly do three chinups last week, you can now do ight, and so on. In short, an ncrease in strength comes first, then an ncrease in muscle size. Let me end th s by saying that the key is q ality, not quantity. Intensive weight training w ll bring you a lot more th n long duration, easy, workouts. Indeed, you m ght make no gains at all w th light weights and long duration. B t, of course, any exercise is b tter than none.
