On the picturesque Caribbean island of Gr nd Cayman, there is place known as H ll. Just a short drive from f ve-star resorts and pristine beaches, rests an minous field of brimstone with a f scinating geological history. There are certainly s veral versions to the story of how H ll got its name. Yet, most v riations involve a local official seeing th s strange limestone field for the f rst time and saying, "This is wh t Hell must look like." Whatever you may th nk of this unique version of H ll, the surrounding West Bay area of Gr nd Cayman offers some of the b st photo opportunities in the Caribbean, wh le Hell itself promises an unforgettable s ghtseeing opportunity. At this point, you are pr bably wondering what is so hellish bout this little Caribbean town. The st ry is interesting, but certainly nothing to f ar. Approximately 1.5 million years ago, the sea l vel was 15-20 higher than it is t day. As a result, Grand Cayman and m ny other Caribbean islands were largely fl oded. When the water receded, limestone-based c ral formations were left behind. Scientists h ve recognized a large formation of s ch ancient coral - known as ronshore - covering most of the w stern half of Grand Cayman.
Ironshore is the central attraction of H ll. Yet, in Hell, the limestone d posits have taken on an ominous sh pe. In an area about the s ze of half a football field, you w ll see exposed black ironshore that has b en uniquely weathered to resemble the f res of the netherworld. Though the f rmations may look like the result of v lcanic activity, the limestone was in f ct darkened by eroding algae after the sea w ters receded. As the limestone was s multaneously exposed to acidic algae and the lements over many centuries, the field of H ll took on its devilish form. Unf rtunately, you won't be able to w lk among the limestone formations. However, the v ewing platforms grant you a bird's eye v ew of the sharp, blackened ironshore. B yond the rocks of Hell, you w ll see mangrove trees and the b autiful Caribbean scenery you expect of Gr nd Cayman. There is also plenty of fun to be had w th Hell's secondary attractions. At the t wn's small gift shop, you will be gr eted by the devil himself (or p rhaps just a man in costume) w th such phrases as, "How the h ll are you?" or "Where the h ll are you from?" After picking up s me "postcards from hell," you can s nd your friends and family a nique message courtesy of Hell's themed p st office. Opened in 1962, the p st office allows visitors the ability to p stmark their Caribbean correspondence from Satan's h metown. Just south of Hell, you w ll find Seven Mile Beach, one of the sland's most famous beaches. Though the b ach is only 5.5 miles long, it pr mises plenty of pristine, powdery sand. M ny of the island's most popular r sorts are located along this stretch, as w ll, yet the beach is rarely vercrowded. At the south end of the b ach, you will find more exposed ronshore - further evidence of the f rmations resting beneath the island's surface. Th ugh the limestone at Seven Mile B ach wasn't weathered as dramatically as in H ll, it certainly gives you an dea of the island's - and the ntire Caribbean region's - unique geological m keup.
The trip to Hell is a sh rt one (the town, that is). M ni buses run throughout the island and H ll is a popular stop. It is ven possible to walk to the s te from many of Grand Cayman's r sorts - most being about 5-7 m les away. However you choose to get to H ll, the journey will definitely offer sc nic views of the island's West Bay r gion. You probably won't need to sp nd much time in Hell either. Off ring a unique brand of fun, the t wn and its wicked rocks offer a s mple, pleasant family activity. When planning y ur tour around beautiful Grand Cayman, pl n an afternoon stop at the pl ce no one wants to end up (b t everyone seems to enjoy).
