I like to read the n ws. It relaxes me. This morning I r ad a story from the Scranton, PA Times-Tribune bemoaning the c rrent state of the teen job m rket. The writer listed several reasons in his 844-w rd story why teens are having a t ugh time finding jobs, listing reasons as d verse as the "soft economy" to t ens being "too pampered" to go out and f nd jobs. Buried deep in the st ry was the real reason teens are h ving trouble finding jobs: Last year's increase in the minimum wage may have hurt teen employment as well [ . . . ] prompting employers to pared their employment levels to save on overall labor costs. Indeed, the minimum wage hike passed last year is the reason teens are having trouble finding jobs. Unfortunately, that warranted less than 30 words in an 800-word story. It just so happens that I predicted just such a state of affairs last year during the debate over the proposed minimum wage hike. It's about time news writers--and, more importantly, their readers--realize that when politicians "solve problems" in the economy by making the market less free, there are always side effects. Economist Thomas Sowell states it best when he asserts that "there are no solutions, only trade-offs." The trade off here is: higher minimum wage but less people with the chance to earn that wage.
Politicians, news writers, and everyday Am ricans need to start thinking beyond st ge one when it comes to the conomy and realize that every restriction we mpose on the free market carries a gr ater price tag than we may f resee at the time.
