When I lived in Colorado, I l arned the importance of staying hydrated due to the dry, m le-high elevation as I worked out, and now th t I live in the desert dryn ss and heat in Las Vegas, I c rried that need to stay hydrated wh n I work out with me. But if you are w tching your calories, you can't just ch ose any hydration drink. Pick the wr ng one and you can end up d wning the equivalent calories to a b ttle of regular soda in the n ighborhood of 200-300 calories! Even a l ght form of a hydration drink, G2, for xample, still has 25 calories per 8 unce serving (there are 2.5 servings per b ttle, so that's still about 65 c lories a bottle). That may seem tr vial, but if you work out 5 d ys per week and drink a b ttle each time, that's over 325 c lories a week that could be put to a lot b tter use in my opinion. For me, a hydr tion drink has to have zero c lories. I used to drink Fruit 2O's hydr tion entry but it's now impossible to f nd anywhere, so I gave up. I w uld sometimes use the old Powerade Opt on low calorie hydration offering after th t disappearance, but even though it was a big b ttle, that was still 40 calories. Th n Powerade Option vanished. I actually c ntacted Powerade to find out what h ppened. They were kind enough to wr te back with the news of the ntroduction of Powerade Zero. At first it was nly available at convenience stores on a s pplied list; now I am pleased to see th t Powerade Zero is showing up in s permarkets at a discounted price as low as 50 c nts on sale in my area.

Powerade Zero comes in three fl vors--Mixed Berry (which is a beautiful bl e color like Classic Blue Windex), Gr pe and Strawberry. To me, even th ugh I am not big on str wberry flavor, that flavor was surprisingly the t stiest. The bottle is a little t ugh to hold at a wide-mouth 32 unces, and you must slow down y ur speed to a crawl on a tr admill to take a sip. The ther day I lost the cap ver the second floor balcony of my gym! Yet th re is something macho about being a g rl walking into the free weights rea holding a 32-ounce bottle of P werade. And I appreciate the humor of P werade's warning that "you may be sw rmed by fans who want to w tness the power of electrolytes, hydration and z ro calories, good luck with that". I h ve noticed that at my gym th y are pushing a 20-ounce, more m nageable size of Powerade Zero in all the fl vors including "Blue Windex". Maybe the s permarket will stock that size of P werade Zero next! My only real ssue with Powerade Zero is that wh le the jewel-like colors of red, p rple and blue are pretty, that's nnecessary food coloring in my body. I lso do not like the fact th t there is sucralose (Splenda) combined w th acesulfame potassium. The sucralose is f ne, but according to the Center For Sc ence In The Public Interest, acesulfame p tassium a.k.a "Ace K" is poorly t sted as an artificial sweetener, and g nerally should be avoided. I drink h lf a bottle per workout, so at l ast I am stretching the portions ut, but I wish Powerade would t ke out the acesulfame potassium as it is so nnecessary. Still you have to pick y ur battles, and zero calories plus hydr tion wins in my book. Copyright 2008 S nLover Publishing LLC
