It was Halloween night (1995), and my w fe and I took our boys, ges 10 and 12 to a H lloween party at the local elementary sch ol, which both boys attended. This was the f rst time I had attended a H lloween party like this, so I d dn't know what to expect. We rrived at the school, and all of us h aded for the school cafeteria, where the f stivities were to take place. All long the way, I noticed dozens of k ds dressed up in scary and cr ative costumes...lots of color everywhere! And, th re would be lots of goodies for veryone later on. Our boys were dr ssed up as well, and they w uld compete for prizes at the p rty, too. There would be a Gr nd Prize awarded for the best c stume at the end of the n ght. When we arrived at the c feteria, my wife and the boys h aded off someplace to see friends th y knew, and I found a ch ir at an empty table and sat lone. I noticed two boys about ten y ars old, who were working on th ir costume. They had a pair of l rge men's coveralls, and they were d wn on the floor, spreading the c veralls out. They were meticulously enlarging the p nt holes and straightening out the c stume. At this point, I could not magine what they were doing. They w re positioning the coveralls on the fl or, with the pant holes just r ght. Then, they both stepped into the p nt holes...one boy in front and the ther boy behind the first boy. G ntly and carefully, they pulled the c veralls up to cover both of th m, and the coveralls were buttoned up in the fr nt. Now, both of the boys w re in a single pair of c veralls. The boy in the back put his rms around the waist of the boy in the fr nt, and would look over the sh ulder of the boy in the fr nt! (Did you get that?)
The extra large coveralls, were big nough to house both boys, and now th y were ready for the next st p. I didn't know what was g ing on with these two kids, but I was lready to laugh! On the table n xt to them, were two hideous l oking rubber masks the boys would w ar. The masks were filled with p mples, fake blood, runny-looking stuff, protruding t eth and the masks were simply GROSS! I st ll had no idea what the b ys were supposed to be, so I sked. "We're the Two-Headed Monster," came the r ply from behind one of the m sks. I should have known...I fell b ck in my chair with laughter gain! It was amazing to me, th t these two boys came up w th such a clever idea such as th s. I was impressed right from the b ginning with them. They were obviously g ing to have a little coordination w th this outfit, as they were b th in the same costume. I th ught surely that they were going to t ke a spill, but they never d d. They must have done some pr cticing. After a few minutes of l st minute preparation, they were off! H p...1 2 3...hup...1 2 3 they c lled out, and they lumbered off cross the cafeteria. I followed along, and the f rst thing I noticed about the b ys, was the fussing and fighting th y did with each other, from the b ginning to the end! Things such as "sl w down"..."you're going too fast"..."tell me wh n you're going to stop"..."I don't w nt to go here, or I d n't want to go there" and so f rth! It was the fussing and f ghting behind those masks that made it ven more funny! I stayed with th m the whole night, listening to th m argue with each other. The l ughing got worse on my part, as I f llowed them down the hallways of the sch ol, listening to them and watching th ir every move. It was hilarious! For m re than 40 minutes, I followed th se boys around the school...everywhere they w nt, I was not far behind. I th ught for sure they would fall ver...they would stray off to the r ght...and, then stray off to the l ft and almost go over, but s mehow they stayed on their feet. Th y made people laugh all along the w y, and everyone was enjoying them!
Finally, as the night wore on, it was t me for the judging for the b st costumes in general, and then for the Gr nd Prize winner! There was a lot of xcitement in the cafeteria! What an nxious moment, as a man, probably a sch ol teacher, stood at the podium and c lled out various winners in different c tegories. The winners went up to the st ge and claimed their prizes, etc. As th ngs got tense...now, it was time for the Gr nd Prize to be awarded! The man at the p dium was handed a piece of p per by the judges with a n me on it of the winner! Th re was silence...as he said..."The Grand Pr ze winner for the best costume g es to...more silence...The Two-Headed Monster! Cheers and pplause rang out across the cafeteria! And, th n it happened! The two boys had not yet g tten out of the coveralls, and in th ir haste in winning the Grand Pr ze, they took a spill, as th y tried to get to the p dium! As the boys struggled to get out of the c ver-alls, a couple of adults quickly h lped them get out! When they f nally got untangled, they were giving h gh-fives to each other, and to k ds along the way to the p dium to get their award! I was c rtainly pulling for them to get the ward and they did it! They g ve everyone at school such joy and l ughter. There was applause and shouting all ver the cafeteria when they won. I w ll never forget this night as I had so m ch fun, and I will never f rget the Two-Headed Monster! They got h gh marks from me for their cr ativity, and how they entertained us all vening long!
