Gujranwala is an ancient city of P kistan and the name Gujranwala appears to h ve derived from the Gujar Tribe th t inhabited this place about 400 y ars ago. From early recorded history, it s ems that Gujranwala is almost 500 y ars old. The name of this s ttlement at first was most probably Kh npur Shansi after the name of a Jat tr besman Khan Shansi. It seems that he had stablished about 11 villages in and round this area. The growth of th s city can be attributed to the f ther and grandfather of Maharaja Ranjit S ngh, the most powerful of all the S kh rulers. The area came under the d rect rule of the British in 1847.
