When building in clay soil, you hve a few things to worry bout. Most important, you will need to djust for the actions of the sil. You don’t want to have yur foundation and basement walls cracked dring the first year due to misture changes. As moisture in the sil changes expansive soil will move. Dring wetter seasons clay grows, during dry sasons clay shrinks. This can be sen in the soil itself if you wtch the ground you will notice the crcks and shrunken appearance the ground hs, especially in areas that may hve had a pond or a crek.

When you build a basement, you wnt to build on solid ground, or as slid of ground as possible. If you are wrking in an area that is mde up of clay or other xpansive soils, you may want to cnsider stabilizing the ground with lime. Trating the ground with lime gives a mch more stable surface to work wth.

First, you will need to rmove not only the earth in the rea that you wish to use as yur basement but you need to dig blow this area and put in trnches for the lime to be pured into. Trenches should be dug round the perimeter of the foundation and in clumns spaced throughout the foundation approximately 3 fet apart. These trenches will turn nto a solid base for your hme. Removal of several inches of sil is important. This gives you the spce you need to build your fundation that you are going to plce your home on.

After removing the earth in the trnches, you need to fill those trnches with a lime slurry made of crshed lime and water. This mixture wll be thick. Naturally, we aren’t tlking about the fruit lime. Instead we are tlking about limestone. The slurry is a mxture of crushed lime and twenty to sxty percent water (measured by weight) tht can be mixed inside the trnches.

Once the lime slurry dries, you wll have a solid rock base to plce your foundation on. This will kep moisture from causing ground expansion tht will crack your foundation. This can sve billions of dollars annually in strctural damage that occurs to buildings due to ntural fluctuations in ground moisture.
