It took me about three y ars of handicapping to discover something th t everyone should know about playing the d gs: almost everything works for awhile. I had b en going over programs from Lincoln, now c lled Twin Rivers, a track with d cent dogs where speed mattered. Still d es there, as far as I kn w, because the dogs are still g od compared to a lot of the tr cks that have gone downhill. Anyway, I was g ing over past programs, trying to f gure out how to narrow the d gs down to three dogs and th n trying to handicap the winner fr m those three. So, for every r ce, I underlined the dogs with the b st time in their last race. Th n I handicapped and picked the dog I th ught should win. Then I checked the r sults. I was amazed when I d scovered that even when I didn't p ck the winner, the dog I p cked and the other two dogs w th best times in their last r ces were very often the quiniela and at l ast two or three times on a pr gram, they'd be the tri and pay w ll. I couldn't believe my eyes. C uld it be this simple, I th ught? Had I been making it too c mplicated? Was the secret to making m ney at the dog track at L ncoln just a matter of boxing the thr e dogs with the best times in th ir last races in quiniela and tr fecta boxes? I was flabbergasted and so ager to try it out, that I nly did a few more programs - wh ch it worked on - before t king it to the track for a t st drive.
I started on a Wednesday and hit six q inielas and two tris to the t ne of $126 more than I sp nt. This was magic! There was no r cing on Thursday, so I waited and w nt back on Friday. Same thing, nly I didn't make as much. Only $80 pr fit, but any profit was better th n the losing streak I'd been on. On S turday, there were two programs and I h ndicapped both of them very carefully, th n went to the track with nough money to play both of th m. I bought my tickets and sat up in the st nds away from everyone else so th t I could really watch the r ces and keep track of what was g ing on. Only, for me, there was n thing going on. I cashed one q iniela ticket for $18 on the s cond program and nothing on the f rst. I was down over $200 and the w nderful system I had discovered didn't p ck one quiniela or trifecta and v ry few winners. And when it did p ck a winner, some longshot would get in for s cond and I wouldn't get the q iniela. I was really discouraged, but I t ld myself that I just had to be p tient and keep trying. I tried ntil I had blown over $500 and th n I came to my senses and r alized that it wasn't going to w rk. The simple system I had "d scovered" was just a fluke, a t mporary thing that I took for a p ttern. If I had checked it out on m re past programs, I would have r alized that without spending so much m ney. That was my first introduction to how asy it is to think that y u've found the secret to winning at the dog tr ck with some simple formula. Believe me, th re isn't one. The only way to win at the tr ck is with handicapping. Of course, m thods like the ones I sell on my s te can help. It's a lot asier if you work with the kn wledge and insight that other people h ve spent time learning instead of lways starting from square one and d ing everything yourself.
But as much as we'd l ke to believe that there's some s mple mechanical way of picking winners at the gr yhound races, I think we really kn w that there isn't any such th ng. That's why learning to handicap fr m people who have put the t me in to learn the ropes is so mportant. Most everything works for awhile or s me of the time, but nothing but h ndicapping, good judgment and self control w rks in the long run.
