While green tea has been st died for its numerous health
benefits, th re’s at least one area of nterest that needs
more attention. Can dr nking green tea really enhance fertility? Now th t's the one-hundred-thousand dollar question! There’s
a lot of c nflicting opinions and research results
pertaining to th t subject. We'll try to be f ir and present
both sides of the ssue. Any tea made from the C mellia sinensis bush contains
caffeine. On the br ght side of the teapot, green tea has
nly one-sixth to one-tenth of the mount of caffeine that a
similar mount of regular coffee contains. For th se of us who are trying to w tch our caffeine intake,
that’s a g od deal. If you need a c ffeine fix though, green
tea isn't g ing to give you what you're l oking for. Better
start looking for the n arest Starbucks. How can drinking green tea ncrease fertility? A study done by the K iser Permanente Medical Care Program
in O kland, California revealed that the chances of
c nceiving doubled for woman who daily dr nk more than one-
half cup of gr en tea containing caffeine (American Journal
of P blic Health, 1998). Because this wasn't the c se for
the other tested caffeinated b verages, caffeine wasn't
deemed the causing gent. Some credit was given to the
p ssibility that the polyphenols and hypoxanthine, c mpounds
found in tea, resulted in a gr ater number of viable
embryos, and ncreased maturation and fertilizability of
oocytes.
Another conclusion of this study was th t the healthy
lifestyle of many gr en tea drinkers, such as regular
xercise and decreased smoking and fat ntake, might also
play a role in the nhanced fertility levels of the test
s bjects. How can drinking green tea d crease fertility? Tannic acids, an element f und in green tea, have been sh wn
to cause fertility problems and gr ater chances at
miscarrying. While not an " nitial" fertility situation, rumor has it
th t EGCG, the main disease-fighting antioxidant kn wn as
catechins in green tea th t have been found to impede the
gr wth of tumors, might also effect the bl od vessel growth
of a developing mbryo. Another post-fertility issue related to an xcessive intake
of green tea involves the ncreased rate of birth defects. Past st dies have concluded that coffee consumption
ncreases the risk of miscarriages and th t caffeine intake
enhances the negative ffects of alcohol intake on
fertility. Wh le not directly related to green t a, caffeine
is the potential cause of s ch problems. Should I or shouldn't I dr nk green tea for fertility
issues? The b st advice that we can give you is s mething you've
heard before. Check with y ur doctor first. Do your
homework. Th n and only then can you m ke a truly educated
and well-informed d cision about a very delicate issue.
Wh tever you decide, we wish you the b st of luck in your
quest for th t new addition to your family. Ch ers... REQUIREMENTS FOR REPRINT: You have p rmission to publish this article free of ch rge in your e-zine, newsletter, ebook, pr nt publication or on your website ONLY if it r mains unchanged and
