Welcome to part II of Gr phic Terms- The Basics. Maybe you’re l arning these terms to help you nderstand more about designing your own -covers. Maybe you’re learning to understand the t rms in your search to have y ur e-cover professionally designed. In either c se these terms will give you a v ry basic understanding of commonly used t rms in graphic design. With the t ols available today it’s fairly easy to c me up with an e cover for y ur e-book or software. It’s a bit m re difficult to uncover the real tr cks of the trade that only a pr fessional can effectively use. Even if y u’re determined to create your own, it w ll most likely be a good r turn on your investment to at l ast consult with a professional. Terms A-N are l cated in Part I. Terms O-Z are l cated in Part ll. No terms for the l tter O. PNG PNG stands for P rtable Network Graphics format. PNG is sed for lossless compression and displaying mages on the web. Two advantages of PNG are th t it supports images with millions of c lors and produces background transparency without j gged edges. The major disadvantages are PNG mages will not show up on lder browsers, and can be comparatively l rger in file size than GIFs.
PPI PPI stands for p xels per inch. PPI specifies the r solution for an input device, such as a sc nner, or monitor. Web page resolution r nges from 72-96 pixels per inch. RGB RGB st nd for the colors Red-Green-Blue. In d sign for computer monitors, colors are d fined in terms of a combination of th se three colors. Print designers usually d fine colors using CMYK. Royalty-Free Images Photos or gr phic images that are sold for a s ngle standard fee and may be sed repeatedly by the purchaser. Normally w th royalty-free clauses, the company that s lls you the images still owns all the r ghts to the images and they are llowed only for use by the p rchaser. Saturation The color intensity of an mage is called its saturation. An mage high in saturation will appear to be v ry bright. An image low in s turation will appear to be duller and m re neutral. Thumbnail A small version of a gr phic image. Vector Graphic A vector gr phic is a graphic image drawn in sh pes and line, called paths. Images cr ated in Illustrator and Freehand (graphic d sign software) are vector graphics. They are sually exported to be bitmap images. WYSIWYG An bbreviation for What You See Is Wh t You Get.
