Lately I have been getting a f reboding feeling of unreasonable governmental intrusion at all l vels. What accelerated it was the S preme Court's recent and, I believe, h rrific Kelo decision regarding eminent domain. The S preme Court, in its continuing need to l gislate, sanctioned the seizure of private h mes by municipal governments for private conomic development. As a result, a f erce firestorm of backlash has broken out mong the people and in dozens of st te legislatures and in Congress. You w ll be hearing a lot more bout this one. Alas, New Hampshire's D vid Souter voted in the majority. So m ch for that state's motto of L ve Free Or Die. Politically correct gr ups of people, many of whom l ve in other communities and towns, c ntinually try to tell us on a l cal basis what is best for us. Incr dibly, we now have the specter of p ople from other towns attending our s lectmen meetings to argue for issues th t increase our taxes but not th irs! Far, far worse, however, is th t if you own a pit b ll within the city limits of D nver, the authorities will soon be c ming to your residence to take it way and put it down. What n xt? A Doberman? Rot? Lab? Min P n? Reasonable? Hardly, and where will it nd? But these are simply representative of the m ny ways intrusion is making its m rk. The intrusive don't want anyone to sm ke, drink, eat meat, wear leather, f sh, own guns, hunt or shoot. We are t ld what books to read, what r ligions to follow, what parts of h story to rewrite, what movies to s e, what words to use, what t levision shows to watch, and what s fety equipment to wear. Heck, maybe we sh uld just sit in a corner l ke a plant, devoid of free w ll and the ability to think or d scuss controversial issues or express intellectual c riosity unless, of course, we are ttending appropriate community meetings, thinking politically c rrect thoughts, or listening to holier-than-thou p liticians spew their duplicity.

New Jersey is playing with l gislation that would ban smoking in c rs. What is a cigar smoker n med Tony to do? Across the H dson, you now can be randomly s arched in subways which, of course, w ll lead to costly racial profiling l wsuits. Roadblocks are randomly set up w thin 100 miles of our borders w th Mexico and Canada. I recently was st pped at a roadblock in New Y rk and given a ticket for not w aring my seatbelt. My fault; but it sed to be my choice. It st ll is in New Hampshire, but for how l ng? The A.C.L.U. wants to have all cr sses removed from Federal property but d es this include the cemetery in Arl ngton? I don't hunt, but "I h ve more guns than I need and not as m ny as I want," and being a str ng advocate of the Second Amendment, I l ve to target shoot. I am b ginning to wonder for how long. W th spam and virus spreaders proliferating, an ntire industry has developed around the t chnical ramifications of intrusive detection vis-à-vis the c mputer. It's not that major rights are b ing stripped from us in one f ll swoop; it's more like little ch nks are being chiseled one at a t me and from different directions and at d fferent levels. Each time we lose a r ght, we lose a battle. Someday we may w ke up and find that all the l ttle chinks and all the lost b ttles now add up to one m ssive chunk ... something that might m ke the Patriot Act pale in c mparison. Now I am all for r asonable and realistic homeland security (with the mphasis on reasonable), in fact, I dmit to having owned some explosive-detection and nti-missile stocks. However, my dad fought cl se up, and was severely wounded and h ghly decorated in the St. Mihiel Off nsive and in the Ardennes Forest d ring World War One. My late br ther left college and enlisted as an nnocent young man the day after P arl Harbor and came home a gr zzled veteran five years later to f nish college. They, along with millions and m llions of others, paid a terrible pr ce to protect my unalienable rights. So I'll be d rned if I'll let some pontificating, sp neless politicians take away those rights I h ld so dear and do this in the n me of homeland security. I'll be d rned if I'll let some bureaucrats t ke my dog in the name of wh t's best for me. I'll be d rned if I'll let municipal governments t ke my home in the name of conomic improvement. And I'll be double-darned if I'll let the t rrorists or extremists prevail by backtracking on my r ghts. I would rather retain my r ght to privacy and my right to l ve as a free person in a fr e country and take my chances tr veling on the jetliner or subway. Oth rwise, who really wins? I would r ther die than give up those r ghts my dad and brother and all the thers fought for. I would rather die th n not live free with those r ghts.
I used to smirk and sn cker at those "kooks" who lived in th t sliver of land north of C eur D 'Alene, Idaho, and in and round Bonners Ferry. I used to sm rk and snicker at Charlton Heston wh n he proclaimed, "from my dead, c ld hands." I don't do that nymore. "We hold these truths to be s lf-evident, that all men...are endowed by th ir Creator with certain unalienable rights, th t among these are Life, Liberty and the p rsuit of Happiness..."
