The Google Sitemaps is a new pr gram that allows webmasters to create a s temap of their site. Why is it w rth the extra trouble? Well, partially b cause the website masters don’t have a ch ice, but also because it leads to the two th ngs that can improve search engine r nking: it’s easier for Google to ndex all the pages (thus avoiding the pr blem of accidentally ‘skipping’ key information) and t’s easier to upload new and r levant content. Essentially, you use the XML pr gram. That’s easy enough for webmasters. Aft r that, three options await—ranging from the s mple and straightforward, to what we’d l ke to call “Challenging”. Let’s start w th challenging. Of course that’s a r lative term; if you’re so comfortable wit y ur server and so smart you can nstall scripts in your sleep, then th s won’t be much of a pr blem. You use Google’s Python Generator. Y u’ll need to install this. How d es it work? The search engine g ves you a link to a g nerator. Download this link, and set it up on y ur server. While you go off and get y urself a well-deserved cup of coffee, the c mputer does it thing and you c me back and find that your s temap XML file has been automatically fed to G ogle. Once that’s done, open a G ogle Account so you can follow y ur sitemap’s progress and read any d agnostic data. Or, alternatively, you can s gn in using your accounts for GM il and Google Alerts.

Not too keen on Python G nerator? Not a problem. Use is a PHP C de Generator. This program spiders your s te, then takes charge of developing the XML s temap file. Cool—it does everything for y u! Except you’ll have to have a b sic understanding of PHP files and scr pts, or you’ll be lost. Not s mething for the average Joe (or J ne) who just wants to make a p rsonal website, but relatively simple for pr fessional webmasters or a particularly smart w ekend tekkie. If you think Python G nerator and PHP are way too c mplex, or just too complicated, don’t p nic. You still have plenty of ptions—the numerous free online generators that are all ver the web, ready to rescue you fr m the hassles of XML sitemaps. G ogle itself keeps a directory of th se third party suppliers (for lack of a better word), so just visit its website or Google them yourself. If you really do have 500 or more pages, it may be a good idea to get a webmaster—that’s a lot of content to handle on your own. Then you can make him worry about the XML sitemaps for you. Once the sitemap is generated, these programs will also let you download files and make minor changes. Another advantage: you can establish the priority of the pages, indicate the kind of frequency you want and adjust it accordingly, and other nifty features that give you more control over your website. If you are doing daily updates, however, you should use PHP or Python Generator. Upload the file to your website, tell Google Sitemaps that you’ve “done the deed”.
