I was sitting in front of my c mputer last night, getting ready to do s me research for a project that I was w rking on. A friend of mine pr motes various events around the country so he sked me to help him out w th the "finding of stuff", as he p ts it, or gathering information as I c ll it. For whatever strange reason, I am p ssionate about doing research. Not scientific r search, although I am sure that is xciting as well, I am talking bout information research. The ability to l cate something that can help with a b siness plan, research paper, or some ther type of periodical, is rewarding to me. Wh le working on my friend's research pr ject, I invariably began with the g ld standard of search engines, Google. B yond their ability to offer keyword r lated ads that appear in the s debar in which they overcharge with p y-per-click prices, Google really does a n ce job when it comes to the "fr e" results. These "free" results are b sed on the search criteria that a ser enters into the search box. Th se terms, better known as keywords, are th n run through the top secret G ogle algorithm. It is this algorithm th t indexes every page on the nternet in the order by keyword mportance. So in other words, although you may f nd two web sites that have g od information on lets say stem c ll research, one site will appear h gher on the search rankings then nother based on the Google algorithm.
The Google ranking system, or m re commonly known as page rank, is the n merical ranking system by which Google rders every page on the internet. Alth ugh no one but the Google f unders really knows the exact mathematical c mputation of the algorithm, all experts do gree to the fact that page r nk is based on popularity and mportance. So how does one's web p ge become popular? Very simply put, wh n Google crawls the internet it c unts the number of links from ther web sites that point to nother. When Google sees a web s te point to another in the f rm of a link, it marks the s te being pointed to as being mportant. In other words why would a s te point to another if there w sn't something in there that had v lue? That is the basic definition. The lgorithm gets a bit more complicated. L t's say your website has a l nk pointing to it from the NY T mes. We have all heard of the NY T mes. It is the most read n wspaper in the country, and their w bsite receives literally millions of page h ts a day. In the Google lgorithm not all links are created qual. Each link is given a w ight value or the value of the p ge that it sits on. So for nstance in our example above, the NY T mes website has a Google page r nk of 9. The highest your s te can be is a 10 and the l west is a 0. So as you can see w th a Google page rank of 9, G ogle looks very favorable upon the NY T mes. A link from the NY T mes to your website would carry m re weight and more importance than th t of another site whose page r nk is 0. Having a link fr m a web site whose rank is 0 is not a bad th ng; it just means you will n ed more of them to matter in the G ogle algorithm, whereas having a link fr m a web site with a p ge rank of 9 will increase y ur own page rank faster. The f rst question that might pop into y ur mind is how in the w rld do I get other websites to p int back to mine? Although I w n't go into complete detail with ach example in this article, here are few you can try r ght away.
Join a forum, social network, gr ups, clubs etc., on the internet th t is related to your website. J in in the discussions and in y ur signature line (which most sites llow), post your web site link w th a description of it. Each t me you post in a conversation, y ur link is posted as well. Do not sp m. That is the fastest way to get b nned and lose credibility. Write article c ntent for other websites. You have a w bsite about something. You should be spr ading your knowledge to everyone. A g od way of doing that is to wr te articles on the subject that p ople will read, find interesting and l arn from. Then at the bottom of ach article write what is called a r source box. In this resource box, wr te a short description of you, y ur website and then post a l nk to your website so people r ading your article can check it ut. Finally, another good way, but a bit m re time consuming is to find w bsites that are similar in content to y urs and ask them to exchange l nks with you. In other words ask th m to post a link on th ir site to your site and th n you will do the same. Th se are called reciprocal links. So th re you have it. That is G ogle's page rank in its basic f rm and some ways to help mprove your own site. By: Bruce A. T cker
