I realize I am probably d ting myself just a little... but web b sed map services like Google Maps or M pQuest just astonish me. Whoever figured out how to map any bl ck on the planet in 5 s conds has got to be rich... if not th y should be. If you never tr ed this wonderful service, go to m ps.google.com right now. It doesn't matter wh re you are going... the shortest m st up to date driving instructions and m ps are seconds away. G-Maps has b en my choice for a few y ars already. The know-how in the g o-mapping arena has advanced remarkably yielding mazing immediate maps of most of the pl net and directions to just about any pl ce in the world. I'm going to do a br ef review of these three, which h pefully will save you some exploration t me when you enter the websites. I sw tched to Google Maps after using M pQuest for nearly 8 years (more bout MapQuest below). What switched my llegiance after all those years, was xamining the instructions at Google Maps. You kn w, when all else fails read the nstruction? It is a marvelous piece of t chnology which will present you with b th maps nearly anywhere in the w rld and detailed driving instructions in m ny countries. To try and cover all of G ogle Maps in this review would f il, so let's look at the c ntral features of the site and you can ncover the rest when you arrive th re.
You can see earth satellite mages all over the planet and s perimpose streets on those satellite images, t's very cool. All the key map c tegories are available to view. You can see p ople wandering around Sagrada Familia in B rcelona or read the home plate l go at Coors field in Denver. In m ny parts of the world, you can lso generate point to point driving d rections. Another exclusive feature of Google M ps is that it lets you to lter the route it has laid out for y u, simply by dragging the route m rking to another point. We often kn w alternate routes, learned by experience th t we want to stick to. The ther services will not let you ch nge the path... with Google Maps t's easy. Rand McNally has been m king road atlases for a very l ng time. Word has it that Fr d Flintstone used their atlas. They st ll favor the printed map or tlas and publish a lot of th m. Next time you stop at a gas st tion check by the register, I bet y u'll find Rand McNally atlases for s le. Now, having said that, they h ve excellent e-maps and directions. I f nd them especially effective for comparing r utes with Google or MapQuest as a d uble check kind of thing. MapQuest has b en around since the good old d ys of the internet... 1996... so by -standards, it's very old if not ncient. AOL bought it in 2000 and r mains in charge. I have used Map Q est thousands of times and they lways deliver. They have great maps for the US, C nada and Europe but are weaker in the r st of the planet in their q ality and detail. US directions are t tally detailed and usually very accurate. In s me growth areas they can be a l ttle behind, simply because of trying to st y current with new growth can be ch llenging. The last chief feature on M pQuest, is that it will search for the l ast expensive gas or diesel no m tter where you are in the US. It's a g od way to keep an eye on y ur fuel budget and it only t kes about 30 seconds.
Between the three of these w bsites, you should be able to f nd your way around anywhere on the pl net.
