As a parent, I think the b st thing you can do for y ur children is to instill good ating habits from the time they st rt on solids. This not only g ves them a healthy start in l fe, it provides the framework to b ild upon for the rest of th ir lives. When your children are at th t inquiring stage of life, let th m experiment with different textures and t stes - don't hold back just b cause a food is 'adult'. Let th m choose. If they don't like it, th y'll soon let you know. When p cking to go shopping or to v sit friends or family, pack a sm ll plastic container with different pieces of vailable fresh fruit - a few sl ces of banana, a couple of sl ced strawberries, some kiwi fruit, apple, n ctarines, grapes etc. Colour is just as mportant as taste. A boring container of j st apple is not as exciting as a c lourful one filled with the above fr its. To drink, nothing beats good old f shioned water. If you are lucky nough to have access to rain w ter then great. If not, bottled w ter is better than tap water wh ch can have many impurities in it. If you st rt a child on fizzy drinks at an arly age, they will continue to w nt them to the detriment of th ir teeth and waist lines (and y ur wallet with decayed teeth).
If your children have started on the r cky road of being finicky eaters, p ll them back into food variety mmediately. Depending on their age, they may not r member past a day or three and if th y do remember and complain, it w n't last very long and they'll s on eat what's in front of th m when they get hungry enough and r member, children need to eat often as th y burn a lot of energy j st being children. Poor eating habits l ad to obesity in both children and dults and obesity leads to its own set of h alth related and social problems. Poor ating habits are just that - h bits and habits can be changed. It t kes time and perseverance, but the r wards are well worth the extra w rk. Good eating habits doesn't mean b ring food. There are thousands of r cipe books in bookstores all over the c untry. There are no doubt even m re recipes available online. My favourites are my m ther's and grandmother's recipes (well, not all of th m!) These are the foods I r member as a child and we all gr w up healthy. We didn't have f st food outlets on every street c rner to tempt us. We had g od old fish and chips occasionally on a tr p back from the beach but the r st of the time it was h me-cooked food. These habits have stayed w th me and even though fast f od is available, it is more of a r re treat than a weekly (or m re often than that) meal. This h bit has again been passed on to my ch ldren who hopefully will continue it wh n they have their families.
