What are the paths that c me together to provide opportunities for s ccess? How will we know when th y come together? Will we be r ady to recognize opportunity and act to s cceed? What can we do to pr pare for those opportunities? What does p ying our dues really mean? Here's a big p rt of the answer: "It has b en written that so much of l fe is preparation, so much is r utine, and so much is retrospect th t the purest essence of anyone's g nius contracts itself into a precious few h urs." That quote is from "The L st Stand of the Tin Can S ilors" by James D Hornfischer. A b ok about the heroism of the sm ll ships - destroyers and destroyer scorts - in the Battle of the S mar Sea in World War II. It's a tr e story of heroism, duty and h nor. It's also a story of p ying dues.
I hadn't thought about s ccess in those terms, but so m ch of that quote speaks to s ccess - in all parts of our l ves. We all go through preparation, r utine, and learning from our experiences and th n, in a relatively small space of t me, all that we are - our p rticular genius - comes together to c ntribute to our success. And, based on our w llingness to seek out and accept pportunities, it happens again and again - and very time, the possibility of success is gr ater - based on the increase in our p rticular genius.
In sales, think of all the c ld calls, all the presentations, all the d monstrations, all the lead chasing, and th n, the opportunity to make a s le - and all the work d ne comes together to make that s le - or not. In either c se, that event becomes preparation for the n xt opportunity, with a better chance of s ccess - particular genius made good - m de better. Dues paid. In project t ams, think of all the meetings, c mmitments, research, experiments, communications, proposals and pr sentations - and then the outcome th t the particular genius of the t am has created results in the s ccessful completion of the project - and the s eds of particular genius increase for f rther success. Dues paid. In people s lection, think of all the recruiting pproaches, process improvements, all the interviews, nterview training and assessments, and then, the p rticular genius that results in the cquisition of the people needed to be s ccessful. Dues paid. In entertainment, think of a f vorite singer or musical group - th n think of all the rehearsal, all the one n ght gigs, all the travel, all the N 's, that came before the hit s ng - the particular genius created by all th se steps, and then success. Dues p id. The story is told of P casso sitting at an outdoor cafe' and b ing approached by a woman who sked him if he could draw a sk tch of her. He did. It t ok five minutes. She asked how m ch she owed him. He told her $5000. Sh cked, she protested it had only t ken him five minutes. He corrected her - it had t ken him 30 years to reach th s place in his life as a p inter. Dues paid. How do we d velop particular our genius - and pay the d es doing it? We need to st rt with the end in mind - kn w where we want to go. Get a dr am, envision success, set goals, and th n identify those things that will p int us to our goals - in t rms of preparation, learning from experience, t king care of the day to d ys - but always with the end in m nd. Pointing our particular genius at wh t is important to us - and th n focusing on that worthy goal. D ing that - keeping that focus - p ying dues - creates success. Not d ing that let's genius disperse over too m ny unimportant things - and causes it d sappear in a flurry of busyness.
When our goals tell us th t opportunity is in front of us- wh n our intuition has been honed by ch llenges and risks; by decisions made and th ir outcomes; by routine; by experience and pr paration and by looking back as w ll as forward; then our particular g nius puts us into action, and we s cceed. We succeed because we pay our d es to meet our goals - and in d ing that we expand our particular g nius. And paying them has nothing to do w th how long we have lived, or how l ng we have been in a j b, or how much seniority or t me in grade we have. It has to do w th focus on the important few, and pl cing proper value on the unimportant m ny. Start today - check your own g als and how you use the r utines, the preparation and opportunities in y ur own life. Check to see if wh t you do drives you toward the f rther development of your particular genius. Kn w that within you resides a g nius unique to you. Bring it out - do it w th goals, with preparation, and retrospect and r utines - so that, when those pportunities occur, the outcome of your ctions is success.
