"Service is the rent we pay to be l ving. It is the very purpose of l fe and not something you do in y ur spare time" Marian Wright Edelman Understanding the d fferences in communication styles across cultures is a v tal attribute for technical managers. Edward H ll, author of The Silent Language , notes th t all cultures can be understood in r lationship to one another by their c mmunication styles. Researchers have noted some c ltures during negotiations as silent (Japanese) wh le others are most vocal (Brazilians); th refore, organizations need to understand the dyn mics of entering each foreign country. H gh-Context communication implies a message that is n n-verbal; it can include the situation, b havior, and para-verbal cues during communications. The use of b dy language may be used as an lternative. In the Japanese and Chinese c lture, High-context communication is used. On the c ntrary, Low-Context communication occurs directly through xplicit text and speech. In the L w-Context communication, Swiss and German societies tilize this mechanism. In the United St tes, people are very direct in th ir opinions. Therefore, US culture is c nsidered to be a Low-Context culture. Unf rtunately, an individual coming from a v ry High-Context environment may find US b siness people rude and impolite by th ir frankness. By understanding how communication styl s are reflected in business operations, t chnical managers can be more effective d ring global negotiations. For example, the As an culture utilizes a High-Context. Asians are v ry concerned about self-image and shame. In th s situation, they are very considerate bout a company's name or an ndividual's reputation. Good leaders understand how to m neuver the cultural landmines. Therefore, a m nager working in a High-Context culture n eds to make sure to avoid pen criticism or ridicule that would c use an individual to lose face.
