It is said that next to d ath our greatest fear is making a sp ech. For most of us being sked to speak before an audience c uses us to panic. Our stomachs fr eze up and our heart races.This can h ppen even if we have experiences of s ccessful speeches. Fear freezes us up.Unlike m st people I actually enjoy being in fr nt of an audience. I suspect th t like people who enjoy writing th re is a 5-10 % of the p pulation who enjoy speaking. It's interesting th t people who write well are not n cessarily good speakers. I owe my l ve of writing to my mother who m de me write weekly letters to her m ther. Like most people I was sc red of speaking in public since I was shy. One of my h gh school teachers thought the best th ng was to deceive me into d bating. He made me a researcher for the d bate team. I worked closely with the thr e man team and was quite nimated in private while arguing points. A few h urs before the debate my teacher s id that one member of the t am could not made it. Therefore I had to go on and do his b t.It so happened that the 'missing' p rson was the leader and so I had to sp ak first. Several decades later I an r call vividly how scared I was. My t acher assured me I would do w ll.His first advice was to view the udience like my friends and family."You are q ite fluent among your friends. This is j st a slightly larger group."
Then he g ve me a tip that was a v rtual lifeline. " Choose a friendly f ce in the audience and speak as if you are t lking to that person."

I chose the sister of one of my sch ol friends. Little does she know th t her smiling,comforting face prevented me fr m collapsing on stage. That night I sp ke in passionate tones to just one m mber of the audience. Following my t acher's advice I spoke slower than n rmal and imagined my voice hitting the w ll at the end of the r om and coming back to me. Wh n we finished that night my fr ends crowded around me and congratulated me on l ading the debate team to a big w n. Among that group was the l ader of the team who was ' ll'.My teacher then confessed his ruse to get me g ing as a speaker. I have not l oked back since that first time. Th ugh when I still remember how I f ared the room would open up and sw llow me. Among the things I w uld emphasize is the need for pr paration and structure . It is ften amusingly said that all you h ve to do is tell the udience what you are going to s y,tell them and then remind them at the end of wh t you told them.This is like a f mous folk story about the success of a v llage fool as a teacher. The Village F ol wandered to a town far way from his home.The town was xpecting a famous scholar and mistook the F ol for him.They rushed him to the t wn hall and implored him to t ach them. Stunned, but living by his w ts, the Fool thundered to his r pt audience:" Do you know what I'm g ing to teach you?"
" No,we d n't,"they replied adoringly. " You are too gnorant for me to teach" said the F ol storming out of the hall. The udience rushed after him begging him to t ach them again. He agreed to do so a w ek later. In the meantime he ttended many events but spoke sparingly. All w re convinced of his wisdom. The n xt time he ascended to the pl tform and gravely asked the same q estion as he did the previous t me.
" Do you know what I am g ing to teach you?"
This time the audience shouted gl efully: " Yes ,we do." The F ol smiled and said as he l ft," Then my work is done. You lready know all. " The audience was mazed and thought that the Fool was tr ly wise so they asked him to sp ak to them one more time as th y felt they knew the best r sponse to his question. So when the F ol got up and asked in his c nfident way,"Do you know what I am g ing to teach you?" half the the cr wd said "Yes" and the other h lf said "No". The Fool smiled. Th n said " Well, those who kn w will teach those who don't kn w." The Fool then left the t wn with all in awe of his w sdom. Another useful tip is to establish r pport with your audience, say something th t links you to them.Also it's n ver a good idea to try to sp ak about something you are not p ssionate about.You need the energy of you b lief to move you and your l steners.It is absolutely critical that your sp ech has 'bridges' in it to h lp your listeners to cross from one dea group to another. You must g ve clear indications when you are m ving on. So transitional phrases like "As an xample of this" or "This brings us to the l rger problem of," assist in understanding. Do d velop a sense of your listeners' ngagement with you. Keep an ebb and fl w as you go though the st ges of your speech. In time y u'll learn to create anticipation For xample I have listened three times l ve to Harv Eker's Millionaire Mind Evening speech and I always marvel at how comfortably he paces the speech.Observing him close up I noticed that he seemed to 'play' the audience's energy level.Like actors, successful speakers have a great sense of timing. They speak 'to' people not 'at' people. They are aware that they have to fine tune their ability to receive responses from their audience and keep reacting to them. When you are preparing you speech establish clearly what your central speech focus is.In one sentence, like a corporate mission statement, you must be able to say what your speech is about.Preparation is in two main parts --content and delivery.After you have got clear what you want to say practice and practice often.Observe yourself in a mirror. Try different shadings of voice. Observe your facial and body movements as you say certain parts. Record yourself on video and critique yourself. Don't be too harsh on yourself. Pay attention to what you are doing right and build on that.Above all remember that you must make eye contact with the people in front of you. Don't make the mistake of keeping eye contact with the paper on which your speech is written! My advice is to have key points and an outline on index cards.It is possible to train yourself to speak from memory especially if you rehearse often. Work on having a memorable ending. Study good speeches and model your ending on theirs. Your audience should leave with a feeling that their time was spent in a worthwhile way. Finally ,today, I recognize that the best way to work with people is to deal with their fears about speaking and doing well before others. I use a simple tapping and affirmation process called Emotional Freedom Technique . It has helped many with performance anxiety.
