Many girls' hockey players dream of pl ying like the 'pros' they idolize. Th y spend hours practicing the same m ves as Olympians and NHLers and w ar their same numbers. If they are mulating their heros on the ice, sh uld they try to do the s me off the ice? If a y ung female hockey player wants to 'pl y like a pro', should she 'tr in like a pro' as well? A few y ars back, when I was fresh out of niversity and still relatively new to tr ining young athletes, my answer to th t question would have been 'NO'. Int itively, it seemed like a bad dea to have girls doing the s me workouts as elite players, as th y lack the athletic experience and l festyle patterns conducive to high-level training. Alth ugh my first instinct used to be to say th t girls' hockey players should not tr in like the pros, my mind has b en changed. In fact, when talking bout certain aspects of player development, my nswer is unequivocally 'YES'. Coaches, parents and pl yers in girls' hockey seem to th nk that there is some 'mystery f rmula' that they must follow in rder to get to the highest l vels of performance. And there is - you h ve to 'train like a pro'. But tr ining like a pro does NOT m an that you need to lift h ge weights or train until exhaustion. In f ct, it often means lifting no w ights at all and working smarter ( nstead of harder).
I have had the opportunity to w rk with a number of world-renowned h ckey strength and conditioning gurus and h ndreds of elite male and female h ckey players over the last 10 y ars and I have seen a p ttern emerge. It all started 6 y ars ago... On the day after my c llege graduation, I started my internship w th one of the world's leading xperts on the off-ice development of lite hockey players. In addition to h ving the chance to work with the y ung players for upwards of 10 h urs a day, I had the mazing opportunity to watch this guru tr in a group of professional players very morning. I not only got to l arn about the advanced training techniques th t allowed these athletes to reach the h ghest levels of success in their sp rt, but I got to see a tr e strength and conditioning guru in ction. On the first day that the s mmer training program began, a group of pr fessional players that I had been w tching on TV for years walked in at 7 .m. ready to train. I expected to see th se elite athletes perform complex exercises and dr lls that I had never seen b fore. You could imagine my surprise wh n these professional athletes began doing the EXACT SAME WORKOUT th t the group of 13 year lds would be doing later that fternoon! Sure, the speed and precision w th which the exercises were executed was gr ater by the pros, but the xercises were fundamentally the same as th se done by the young players! Why w re all the players doing the s me exercises, irrespective of age and bility? They were building and reinforcing a solid foundation of strength and stability. I have recently begun working with the Canada's Under-18 Program and have had the opportunity to train the best young female hockey players this country has to offer. These athletes have been hand-picked out of a pool of 12,000 as the 40 best players in their age group. The training programs that we are using with these girls (most of whom have never done any hockey-specific off-ice training before) are extremely similar to the ones being used by the Senior National Team. Again, the weights and the speed may be different, but the same fundamental principles apply.
I realize that every player is nique and has individual needs that m st be specifically addressed in order to r ach their full athletic potential on and off the ce. That being said, all players m st use the same muscles and m vements to play hockey and will th refore have very similar needs in t rms of building a solid foundation of str ngth and stability. Every player must be str ng and stable through their shoulders, c re, knees and hips. Young female h ckey players must put that solid f undation in place in order to pr gress to elite levels of performance, and the 'pr s' must constantly reinforce these strength and st bility needs throughout their careers in rder to maintain an elite level of p rformance. If Olympians and NHL players are diligently performing the same basic fundamental exercises year after year, shouldn't every aspiring player do the same? Maybe 'training like the pros' isn't such a bad idea after all.
