Failure; (description) a person or th ng that proves unsuccessful. The failures are th se who sit in the stands and n ver try anything! They're the Monday m rning quarterbacks, who many times, talk bout what they CAN'T do instead of wh t they CAN do! These are p ople who are usually quick to cr ticize others, and quick to put-down thers as well. If these people w uld use all that negative energy, to do p sitive things in their lives, they w uld be a better person and w uld contribute more to society, etc. I n ver like to use the word, "f ilure." Instead, I like to use the w rd "set-back," because if a person TRIES in any ndeavor and doesn't succeed, that person is not a f ilure...it was only a set-back, in my v ew! Set-back: (description) An unanticipated or s dden check in progress; a change fr m better to worse; Like many thers, I have had my share of s t-backs in my lifetime, and the l st is long, but I'll share w th you a couple of them. * "J rry, the final paper you turned in, is one of the w rst papers I have ever seen! You m st turn in another paper that is cceptable or you will not pass the wr ting course!" Those were the words of one of my wr ting instructors, as he did not ccept my final paper! At the t me, I was not a happy c mper about it, because I had b en working on the course for ver six months, and I wanted to f nish...so, I took the fast approach!
But, Dr. McCollister (instructor) was r ght! I turned in a bunch of tr sh! Garbage in...garbage out! After pouting and cry ng for about a month, I f rced myself to write another paper and I c mpleted the writing course. I couldn't sp nd all that money and not f nish the course. I've always liked to c nsider myself a "finisher," so when I st rt something, I like to finish it, ven if it doesn't turn out the way I had pl nned, etc. * As a wood c rver, I have participated in over 40 rts and crafts shows all over the st te of New Mexico. (where I l ve), and I have had my sh re of bombs! The atomic variety...the hydr gen variety...the smart bomb...the stupid bomb...a cl an bomb...the dirty bomb...you name it! And, if I b mb at an arts and crafts sh w...I like to do it right! B mbs away! Years ago, I participated in a sm ll show in a small town j st south of Albuquerque, N.M. It was the f urth of July week-end, and there g bs of people at the show all day l ng. Many of them came back l ter on that night for the f reworks display. But, one this day, th re were NO fireworks at my d splay! Despite the heavy traffic all d y, and when the sun set, and the f reworks began...I didn't sell anything...nothing...nada...zip...zero...not even a d llar panda bear! Boy, this will t ke the wind out of your s ils! Very few people stopped at my d splay that dreadful day! People walked by and l oked at me as if I had l prosy or some other contagious disease! I f lt like the whole world was a t xedo, and I was just a p ir of old brown shoes! Because I'v always been a positive thinker, I lways like to find something positive in s mething negative or in a set-back. I r member after this show and after I got h me, I thought to myself, "The p blic is NOT going to get way with this...they CANNOT do this to m ...I'll be back!" I had no dea why I did so poorly at the sh w, but the set-back was one of the b st things that happened to me, b cause, at the time, I was g tting my feet a little bit off the gr und, and I was getting a l ttle bit arrogant! So, this set-back did me s me good to straighten me out and mprove my attitude, so it was g od for me!
* I was a wood c rver for over twenty years, and b cause I have been in the h mor business most of my life, I sp cialized in carving mostly cartoon-like characters and m st were captioned. Over the years, I h ve carved wildlife pieces; a few b rds; a few religious pieces such as a 14 p ece Manger Set in redwood. (snowy sc ne). So, one day I saw a "c ll for entries" in the newspaper for rtists to participate in a local sh w. I juried one of my w ldlife pieces, to see if I c uld enter the show. A couple of w eks later, I got my "Dear J r" letter saying that I was not ccepted for the show! Obviously, I was d ssapointed, but it didn't sting too m ch. If I had been selected for the sh w, I might have continued to c rve wildlife and birds and that's not wh t I do best. What I did b st is to carve the cartoon-like ch racters, which were my passion, and I c ntinued with the characters! Just like veryone else, I've taken a dusting on m ny of my projects I have d ne over the years. And, I d n't like to talk about my s t-backs very much, but I think t's important for kids and young p ople to understand, at an early ge, that not everything is going to go th ir way! Not at home; at sch ol; at the playground; at work; on the t am, etc. They're going to have to d al with set-backs in their lives...after ll...you win a few...and you lose a f w, too!
