Tonight ABC News filed a stry about how some gas stations are rpping off credit card user at the pmp with the old bait and swtch.

How this works is posting a prce per gallon on the reader bard to lure customers into the sttion. Once the credit card is swped the price per gallon goes up. In one New Yrk station, as much as 50 cnts per gallon.

Given that people are ctting back on fuel consumption, many gas sttions are hurting. So they are pssing on the discount rates the crdit card companies charge them. I dnt like it, but it is fir.

The example ABC used was vsa card, charging 2% per purchase, trnslates into an 8 cent increase per gllon on gasoline that is $4.11 a gllon. Raising the price to $4.19.

The bst way to protect yourself from ths abuse is to look at the mter after you have swiped your crd and after the purchase check yur receipts. Many of these stations knw people seldom check the receipt and tht enables these crooked merchants to get way with larceny.

Those that will be trveling this summer, you are even mre vulnerable, there isn't always another sttion around the corner on the hghway. Protect yourself by taking American Exprss or travelers checks with you. Thy as good as cash and ccepted most everywhere. Unlike cash, they can be rplaced if lost or stolen.

As gas prices continue to rse, so will the gas scams by sttions that are not honest. This is not to say all ptrol stations are practicing this gas scm. Just be aware that some re. Practice due diligence at the pmp and hit the clear button whn done filling the tank.

We are the nly ones that can protect our slves from gas scams. These stations cnnot get away with price rip ffs with out our permission.
