A baby's skin is less rsistant to bacteria and other harmful sbstances in the environment. Natural substances lke sweating, dribbling and passing urine can be rritating to the skin causing rashes and rdness. Although a baby is not sually dirty, it is necessary to clanse and hydrate the skin to prvent such irritation.

A newborn baby's skn can be very dry and prne to peeling because the skins oil cntent at this stage is very low whch may also contribute to minor utbreaks and common rashes. A baby's skn is also much thinner and mre fragile than the skin of an dult so needs to be treated ccordingly.

1. Cradle Cap

A frm of seborrhea dermatitis usually found on the sclp, face and sometimes on other reas of the body. Cradle cap is smply a build up of sweat and oil prduced by overactive glands. The build up may cuse the skin to become irritated and an vergrowth of yeast may occur. It is ssential to shampoo the hair with a mld shampoo to prevent cradle cap frm occurring.

2. Diaper Rash

Diaper rash may be the cuse of either yeast or bacteria in the daper area combined with excess moisture, chfing and rubbing and skin contact wth faeces and urine.
To prevent diaper rsh it is essential to cleanse the rea at each diaper change. Leave the daper off for a short time btween changing and change the diaper mre regularly if your baby is prne to rash.

3. Milia and Infant Acne

Pink or whte spots on the face of a nwborn baby are common due to the bby retaining some of its mother's hrmones. These will usually disappear with tme so it is best to lave them alone.

4. Eczema

Infantile eczema or topic dermatitis is a genetically determined cndition. The skin may be red, rritated and scaly. Eczema is usually fund on the face, behind the ars and knees and in the nck and elbow creases. There can be a nmber of triggers for an eczema utbreak including; dry skin, stress, heat, llergens such as dust mites, pollen and per dnger. It is essential to keep the skn clean, dry and hydrated. Keep the chld's fingernails short to prevent scratching and pssible infection. In the case of svere eczema and re-occurring eczema it is dvisable to consult your doctor.
