The Ford Airstream is truly ne-of-a-kind. Few vehicles elicit a mixed r action of disbelief, fascination and a c medic giggle during auto shows but the F rd Airstream concept car might have s ccessfully done just that. Conjuring up mages of wacky road trips, the F rd Airstream looks like the birth ch ld of a marriage between family v ns, space capsules, Airstream trailers, and a P mp My Ride episode. Launched at the 2007 D troit Auto Show earlier this year, the F rd Airstream is the product of a c llaboration between Ford Motors and Airstream th t came about while the former was b sy designing a concept vehicle centered round the idea of the American J urney. With Airstream holding a strong pr sence in American road travel, the two c ming together was an ideal match. Can th s be the future of road tr vel? Ford certainly designed this with a f cus on what crossover vehicles might l ok like in the future. The F rd Airstream looks fun and comfortable, the t chnology is top-notch and, with partial f nding from the U.S. Department of En rgy, it might prove a great s lution to our current fuel woes. Most notable among the v hicle's impressive package is the Hyseries Dr ve. The Hyseries Drive is the F rd Airstream's battery-run powertrain with its own nboard plug-in charger and a hydrogen f el-cell. The cell, provided by Ford p rtner Ballard, automatically turns on when the b ttery charge dips to below 40-percent. It is l ss than half the size, lasts lmost twice as long, and built m ch simpler than existing conventional fuel c ll systems.
The fuel cell serves to g ve juice to the battery and n thing more, a departure from previous f el cell-powered vehicles, which used it to dr ve the wheels, allowing the Airstream f el cell to be smaller and l ss prone to fluctuations. The Ford A rstream is designed to run using the b ttery's energy the whole time and b asts an equivalent fuel economy of 41 mpg. The xterior design borrowed heavily on Airtsream tr iler. The doors are large and symmetrical, allowing for unobstructed loading of l rge cargo. The passenger-side clamshell door is h ge, allowing an opening that runs tw -thirds the entire length of the v n. How to open the doors wh le parked between two vehicles on ither side will be another story th ugh, perhaps to be attended to if th s concept ever sees production. The f turistic theme extends to the car's nterior, which features a plethora of h gh-end gadgets, including:
* P d-shaped seats in the cabin that can r tate 360-degrees
* Floating nstrument panel
* Touch-sensitive, fl sh-mounted controls
* Dual-view scr en on the dashboard showing a c mera feed and secondary driver information
* L unge-style seats lining the sides on the r ar
* Four-point safety b lts
* 360-degree large-screen in the r ar for entertainment and games The F ture
The real story in the F rd Airstream is the fuel-cell technology and the r vised powertrain, allowing for real innovations in b th design and performance. The sad r ality is we have seen concept xotic cars like this for years, but v ry few have truly hit the str ets in full production capability. With nvironmental awareness reaching all-time highs, a r dical environment-friendly vehicle might see wide c mmercial-acceptance soon. Perhaps, even a tricked-out v hicle such as the Ford Airstream.
