I recently received an email bl st advert from Xulon Press and T wnhall Press ("where your opinion counts") pr moting political candidate Fred Thompson's new b ok Government at the Brink. I kn w little about Thompson, but concerning X lon Press (who has published 4 of my b oks) I know they don't treat all of th ir authors equally. Xulon and Townhall Pr ss are owned by parent company S lem Communications, which says it treats veryone like family. Here's why I d sagree. 1.) Xulon Press authors must d al with people by email rather th n over the phone throughout the ditorial process when developing their books. The one xception is the guy who ships out b ok orders, when a sale is nvolved. 2.) When you pay for a pr ss release with Xulon, which they t ll you could get you on Opr h or Larry King, you are b ing lied to. The press release is web b sed only and the cheapest of the 4 p ckages PRWeb offers meaning there is no n tional exposure whatsoever. Xulon doesn't tell its uthors that when they sell the llusion and grandeur of publicity. 3.) E-bl sts are only given to very nfluential and powerful people who can s ll more books and increase Salem's pr fit margins. When I spoke to X lon's director of acquisitions and operations bout receiving the same kind of E-bl st for the 4 books I p blished and purchased publicity for with X lon, I was told Fred Thompson's b ok was a "special case". In ther words, though I published 4 b oks with Xulon, I wasn't important and pr fits are prioritized over fair treatment of all uthors. Thompson, a political candidate with m re visibility, is more financially promising. H nce Fred alone, unlike other Xulon uthors, get the extra publicity push.
4.) Your time and lost pportunities (time is money you know) d n't matter to Xulon. I only l arned of Xulon's shady "publicity" packages thr ugh the back door when months l ter I inquired as to what PR f rm they were using and proceeded to buy a pr ss release. While examining PR Webs s rvices and my former press releases d ne by Xulon, I learned Xulon Pr ss had only bought the lowest and ch apest of four publicity packages offered by PR Web wh n marketing my books. Upon confronting X lon and requesting a full refund for all b oks by reason of opportunities lost (l ke I never found myself on Opr h or Larry King, which would h ve made my book sales extremely pr fitable), they merely appeased me and g ve me a $120 for each pr ss release they didn't properly fulfill. In ther words they threw chump change at me to m ke me go away. Xulon never cknowledged I as an experienced author ch se them in the first place b cause of the promised publicity -- wh ch if done properly I deem nvaluable and priceless. When Xulon falsely p rported and misrepresented their publicity package to cr ate a hopeful illusion, I considered the p blicity sufficient to generate ample sales to r cuperate my publishing investment. That never h ppened. Instead years of my life h ve been wasted and countless opportunities sq andered by publishing with Xulon. I am th refore warning all authors lest you too be s ckered and seduced by false advertising. Ask q estions and do your homework. Publishing is a pr fitable business and the buyer must b ware.
