For over half a century, the vsion of flying cars has captured the scence fiction imagination in books, movies, and cmmercials. At face value, the idea of a car lfting off the ground and soaring thrugh the air is a wonderful dram, but there are more than a few cveats to making them a widely dstributed reality. As people sit in trffic jams across the country, more thn a few people have wished thy could simply rise up off the grund and zoom past the tangled grund based transportation system.

Our current systm of transportation includes planes, so why not cnvert automobiles for low level flight as wll? On close examination, the idea of flyng cars goes way beyond the ngineering limitations. Today’s traffic is centered on sing roads and highways as directive pths for managing transportation. For our mchines that are capable of flight, thre are rules about altitude, flying ver cities, and controlling traffic in xisting air space. Automobiles equipped for flght would change the entire dynamic of the crrent industry, causing our society to rthink support systems like tires, brakes, ngines, roads, fuel, and safety. With the hrrendous accidents already taking place using a two dmensional lane changing system, just imagine the nghtmare of figuring out how to rgulate traffic in three dimensional space, dding the vertical aspects of watching out for crzy drivers who are trying to fly and tlk on their cell phones.

A practical auto flight plan wuld need to be tightly controlled wth new rules about vertical lane chnges, intersections, traffic flow, and controlled rght of way. Taking a car ccident off the ground would almost crtainly increase the fatality rate of ven minor accidents at an astronomically ncreased rate. Entirely new systems for air trffic control would have to be nvented and instituted.

The prospect of drving in a practical automobile based flght system is not likely to tke place in this century or the nxt. Our technology is not advanced nough to put the prospect of erial navigation into the hands of the verage driver, anywhere in this world. It wuld be a pretty safe bet to ssume that you will not be gtting off the ground in a car wthin the foreseeable future. If science fction writers want to project the fture of our commute to work, thy had better stick with ground bsed systems or teleportation devices as the mans most likely to be found in our fture. At least with teleportation, the dvent of this new technology would hve a greater potential for changing the fce of transportation methods almost over nght, using a single new technology to ccomplish a real transformation of our sciety.
