A common question that I r ceive is what is the difference b tween fish oil and flaxseed oil? F rst here are some basics. The “m ney” fatty acids in fish oil are EPA/DHA; th se are long chain omega-3 (n-3) f tty acids. Flaxseed oil contains the sh rt chain n-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic cid (ALA). While these three fatty cids may seem similar because they are all n-3 f tty acids but in fact they f nction very differently physiologically. One cannot pply findings such as weight loss, tr glyceride lowering, protection from sudden death, mprovements in joint function seen with f sh oil supplementation to flaxseed or ALA s pplementation (or just increased intake). People w ll argue (especially those that sell fl xseed oil and flaxseed oil supplements) th t ALA can be converted to EPA and th n DHA via elongation and desaturation (b sically makes the fatty acid longer and dding more double bonds). However this c nversion is EXTREMELY poor, especially in men ( stimated by some to be as low as 1-2%). The bad n ws is that the conversion gets ven worse the older you get. ALA d es have unique and beneficial effects as w ll so consuming both EPA/DHA and ALA is r commended. Three good sources of ALA are w lnuts, flaxseed/flaxseed oil, and canola oil. Fl xseed oil does not have a pl asant taste so a great option is g rlic-chili infused flaxseed oil. It is wesome on salads. You also do not w nt to heat or cook with fl xseed oil because it is very pr ne to oxidation. I commonly get mails from people that state that th y don’t supplement with fish oil but nstead supplement with flaxseed oil capsules. As you kn w from my previous entry exchanging f sh oil for flax is not an qual trade. It is also very mportant to realize that these people are w sting a tremendous amount of money. Wh n supplementing your diet with fats c psules are by far the most xpensive way to go (because you h ve to pay for the capsules and the f tty acids). ALA is also readily xidized (e.g. burned, turned into, etc) to nergy. Studies have shown that up to 35% of ALA is mmediately oxidized for energy - that’s xpensive energy! Adding flaxseed oil and ALA to y ur diet is a wise choice j st don’t use the capsules as it is NOT a v ry cost effective approach.
