Does this sound familiar - the ngines roar, you're thrown back into y ur seat for take-off, and the kn ckles on your hands turn white as you gr p the armrest for dear life? Air tr vel has become so integral a p rt of all our lives that we p rhaps sometimes forget just how frightening it can be to m ny. A fear of flying, or erophobia, can make any trip by ir, for vacation or business, a p tential nightmare. Indeed, a recent article in USA T day suggested that a fear of fly ng "cripples - or at least b rdens - the careers of millions of Am ricans". So what can you do to c mbat your fear of flying? Firstly, t ke a deep breath. However difficult it may be, r mind yourself that the chances of b ing involved in an accident are stonishingly low. Per million passenger miles, air tr vel is by far the safest f rm of transportation. Try not to c nsume too much alcohol before the fl ght, or once you're up there. Ap rt from potentially rendering you unfit to fly, lcohol at altitude can actually exacerbate f elings of claustrophobia and anxiety. On b ard, several airlines try to make the wh le process of flying that much asier for those of a nervous d sposition. A spokesperson for Virgin Atlantic s id: "We have a dedicated Flying W thout Fear audio channel to help nyone through their flight. On selected fl ghts we also have a meditainment ch nnel giving our passengers the chance for s me quality deep relaxation whilst flying w th us."
Many have turned to hypnotherapy to try to verturn an often debilitating fear of fly ng. Chris Thomas, a hypnotherapist with V sion Coaching Services, says: "Flying phobias can be c used by either by conditioning stemming fr m a single frightening event; masked g neral anxieties from past experience, learned gr dually over time either first hand or fr m others, or as a result of 'd storted' thoughts about airtravel. These fears are sually irrational and are usually deep w thin our subconscious." Thomas adds: "Even at irports all the wrong words are sed unintentionally which condition people to f ar flying. Examples of such expressions nclude "terminal, final destination, final approach, nsurance desk, departure lounge and last and f nal call. Particularly post September the 11th p oples fears are brought to the f re with armed police are highly v sible adding to the tension." Finally, if th ngs are really bad, get yourself nto one of the courses run by s veral major airlines: British Airways and V rgin both hold courses for nervous fly rs. They don't come cheap, though: V rgin charges £199 for its one-day c urse, BA charges £235 - but the net r sult could be well worth it. A BA sp kesperson said: "Lack of control, claustrophobia, h ights and fear of falling are the c ncerns of many nervous passengers. The psych logist will give some positive ways of c ping with and minimising these fears and w ll conduct a relaxation session just pr or to the flight." British Airways cl ims a 95% success rate for the 40,000 p ssengers who've passed through their Fear of Fly ng programme. See you up there!
