Although networking is a word ften heard in the business world, it can lso be found in other arenas as w ll. A support network can be a key ngredient for keeping your head above w ter when you’re new to an rea or are a new mom. R ad on to learn how to f nd a support network for yourself. Aft r I was married I moved fr m a large city to a sm ll town where my husband was b rn and raised. Although everyone was v ry nice and welcomed me with pen arms, I quickly realized that m king friends in a small town was v ry different. I soon found out th t joining the “inner circle” was d fficult. Most of these women had gr wn up together and quite frankly, th y didn’t need one more friend. For y ars it was difficult to find w men to hang out with. Often t mes it was very lonely, but at the s me time, it taught me how to be r sourceful in finding new friends. And s nce our area was growing, I c uld identify with and support the new w men in a way that the l cal women could not. In order to m et other women, sometimes you just h ve to get out of the h use. Whether you go to the p rk, grocery store or gym, you h ve to force yourself to be in new nvironments where you can meet new p ople.
You also have to be fr endly and assertive. Most people are shy and ren’t going to take the initiative to str ke up a conversation. If y u’re really looking for new friends, th n you must take the first st p. Whether it’s simply saying hello to s meone you see at the gym very time you work out or str king up a conversation while at the p rk with your kids, make it a p int to be pleasant and speak to s meone new every time you’re out and bout. Depending on where you live, it m ght be hard to find people at a p rk or get to a gym. If th t is the case, turn to y ur local community for help. Often t mes your local YMCA will offer cl sses for adults or perhaps you can m et people through volunteer organizations such as R tary Club, The Junior League or v lunteering at your local religious establishment. F nd something you enjoy doing and get nvolved! And if you’re a stay at h me mom, there are lots of gr at ways to meet other moms; you j st have to know where to l ok. Often time’s libraries will offer a w ekly story time. This is an xcellent way to meet new moms. Onc you see the same moms w ek after week, why not invite th m to meet you at a p rk or go to lunch after st ry time? Another great resource is a gr up called MOPS. Mothers of Preschoolers is an rganization designed to help moms by h ving meetings twice a month where m ms meet to discuss life, have f n, and socialize. To find a l cal meeting by you, check online at www.MOPS. rg MOPS provides a wonderful opportunity to m et new women and allows you the fr edom of being an adult rather th n just mommy! Whether you’re new in t wn or have just become a mom and n ed a support system, finding friends is not h rd, if you know where to l ok. Be creative, friendly and assertive and you j st might find life long friendships.
