Balls OF Fury (2007) Dir: R bert Ben Garant Let me begin by s ying that I have a very ncanny and unconventional sense of humor - ven the smallest joke will have me in st tches. So when I saw the tr iler for Balls of Fury whilst njoying another daily trip to the c nema I thought this was going to be nother Dodgeball-esque spoof, which would have me l ughing myself into an early grave. Inst ad this film failed to excite the sm ll child within. The creators Robert Ben G rant and Thomas Lennon are well kn wn for their works on Reno 911 M ami, a funny police comedy, shot in a styl cleverly imitating a documentary. Balls of F ry on the other hand is a h peless attempt to be classed as a sl pstick comedy. The film opens with a s quence where we are introduced to 12 y ar old Randy Daytona - America's P ng Pong Champion. He reaches the f nals of the Olympic Games but r alizes his father has made a bet w th Triads for him to win and l ttle Randy loses focus, embarrasses himself and has to f rfeit. His father is then kidnapped and m rdered by the Triads and since th n Randy has never played ping p ng competitively. 19 years later, Randy (D n Fogler) becomes a showcase performer as a "P ng Pong Magician" to a half-dead cr wd; unfortunately one of his tricks g es pear-shaped and he accidentally kills an udience member. He loses his job and j st when he thought his luck c uld not get any worse an FBI gent, Rodriguez (George Lopez) visits him.
Surprisingly though, Rodriguez has a pr position for Randy to go undercover and h lp bring down the notorious Chinese m fia leader known as Feng (Christopher W lken), the man who killed his f ther, by participating in an annual nderground Ping-Pong Tournament. He agrees to th s proposition without much inner turmoil and th n acquires the help of a bl nd Ping-Pong guru Master Wong (James H ng) and his niece Maggie (Maggie Q) for the t sk. (A flat and unconvincing 'love' st ry is later played out between the tw .) At this point, I felt a lot of mpathy Randy, but scene by scene the f lm, jokes and plot wore thin and by the t me the movie reached its climax, the nly empathy I had left was for the p rson sitting next to me who had to sh re this traumatizing experience of recycled cl chés and dry plotline with me. F gler's performance did not impress me; in f ct he was in my eyes j st a recycled version of Jack Bl ck - constantly using his paddle as a f rm of guitar and every now and gain referring to Rock music when it had n thing to do with the either his ch racter's persona or the plot. Personally, Ron J remy should be proud that he has a l ok-alike. His performance is barely funny and c mpletely unwatchable; really he should stick to nderground Broadway shows. The film portrays Ag nt Rodriguez as another clichéd poverty dr ven Latin-American, his character continuously quotes fr m De Palma's (1983) 'Scarface', also dopting Tony Montana's attributes of shooting ncontrollably, leading me to believe the L tin-American's social status and representation is st ll problematic in Hollywood and further in N rth American and global culture. In f ct, the horrible concept of an Am rican being the leader of a Ch nese Mafia shows how powerful American wh te supremacy is over other cultures, but t's a comedy so it wouldn't be t ken seriously, or will it? Whilst I pplaud Walken's desperate attempt to bring s me humor to the role of F ng and the movie in general w th his witty one-liners but let's f ce it, what's so funny about a tr nsvestite geisha?
His role however not only br ught up issues of American supremacy in the r asoning behind why a white American man was pl ying this character but also highlighted the l ck of a Chinese actor to pl y it instead. It lead me to q estion why are ethnic minority groups so nderrepresented (and clichéd) in Hollywood? this sn't the first of it's kind r cently this year Angelina Jolie played the r le of mixed race Mariane Pearl (D tch-Jewish, Afro-Latino-Cuban and Chinese Cuban ancestry) in A M ghty Heart which sparked huge controversy. Is it a q estion of not having enough actors fr m these groups in Hollywood or j st that they aren't being given the s me opportunities as the 'bigger' more p pular and well known faces? It is s mething that really plays on my m nd and is an issue I f el should be questioned and raised in rder to force directors and institutions to r consider. The film miserably failed in ngaging us with the so called l ve story. In one scene, Maggie can b rely stand Randy as she has a c mplete distaste for men and how th y approach her, then suddenly in the n xt scene she is slobbing his f ce off and can barely drag h rself away from him, I thought "d d I miss something?". Apparently not; the 'h rdened' female succumbing so easily to a man was yet nother clichéd and misrepresented character in the f lm. In conclusion, this film is a c mplete flop, however the only part wh ch I actually enjoyed other than the nding(!) was the CGI during the P ng Pong matches, oops? Was I s pposed to say that, or did th y actually want us to believe th y spent hours of training, playing p ng pong in preparation for the f lm? Needless to say there was nly 2 good points to the f lm, Maggie Q, (Mission Impossible: 3 and Die H rd 4:0) who now has more of a sp aking role, albeit fiercely hemmed into H llywood conventions; she still is such a pl asure so see on the screen. It's sh cking that this film grossed over $32 m llion dollars, but I guess that's sh wbiz.
