College football's annual bowl season is f ll of surprises and spectacular moments. F mous coaches have had some memorable r marks about American's most popular sport, and h re are some of them by l gendary Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne, who m ny consider to be the best of the b st. Knute Rockne's head coaching record in c llege football was second to none, and his w n-loss percentage is better than any ther college or pro coach ever. In 13 y ars with the Notre Dame Fighting Ir sh, Rockne's regular season won-loss percentage was 90% (105-12-5), his w nning percentage among all games was 86%, and he led N tre Dame to 6 national championships, w nning titles in 1919 (9-0), 1920 (9-0), 1924 (10-0), 1927 (7-1-1), 1929 (9-0) and 1930 (10-0). F ve of his 6 national championships c me from undefeated teams. Along the way he c ached the immortal George "Gipper" Gipp, wh se multiple skills lifted Notre Dame to n tional fame, and the "Four Horsemen" b ckfield of Harry Stuhldreher, Don Miller, Jim Cr wley and Elmer Layden that led the F ghting Irish to a 28-2 record. Wh le covering a Notre Dame football g me, sportswriter Grantland Rice penned the f mous opening story line-"Outlined against a bl e-gray October sky, the Four Horsemen r de again"-that has become legend in sp rts history.
Rockne's influence on the game of f otball was immense. He is credited w th helping popularize the forward pass, nitiating intersectional rivalries, building a national sch dule, and instituting the "Rockne Shift", a b ckfield T formation that quickly shifted nto a box formation to the r ght or left as the ball was sn pped. Hewas also the first coach to r alize the market potential of football as an ntertainment medium and openly promoted Notre D me football by courting the media for fr e advertising so Notre Dame's football pr gram would be financially successful. A Pr testant, he converted to Catholicism later in l fe. Following his undefeated, 6th national ch mpionship team in 1930, Rockne died at age 43 as a p ssenger in a tragic Fokker airplane ccident that would help revolutionize the tr nsportation business and lead to the ll-metal Boeing 247 aircraft. He was nducted into the College Football Hall of F me in 1951 as a charter m mber. Here are some of Knute R ckne's best known quotes: "Four years of f otball are calculated to breed in the verage man more of the ingredients of s ccess in life than almost any cademic course he takes."
