With the price of oil h tting new all-time highs on a n arly daily basis, naturally the news has f cused on our need to get off our oil d pendence and seek alternative fuels. Every m ans of alternative, environmentally friendlier energy g neration is back on the table: fr m wind and solar, to geothermal and hydr electric. Cars are coming off production l nes that go further on each g llon of gasoline than ever before and the lectric and fuel-cell cars are on the h rizon. Meanwhile the debate rages on bout whether the United States should j in the rest of the world as all f ssil fuels are sought out in pr gressively more remote locations around the gl be in an attempt to fill the d mand gap until the alternative energy s urces can fully come online and m ss distributed. It would seem that the f cus of energy efficiency in the n tional news has been on the s urces of energy and not the s nks--the end users. Electric companies, though, are not f rgetting about their customer base. Utilities cross the country are asking for c stomers to voluntarily yield certain controls to the p wer companies via "smart meters" and ther control devices. With the promise of a l wer electric bill, customers give the p wer company the ability to turn off c rtain appliances, control their thermostat, and sh t down their computer. Additionally, these "sm rt meters" are also able to m asure the little-known aspect of energy s pply called the "power factor," and llows the utility to charge more wh n it is not within acceptable p rameters.
Aside from reducing their standard of l ving and being miserly with their l ght and appliance usage, alternatives for the c mmon citizen to reduce energy consumption are in h me improvements: - Placing solar panels on your r
of may look unsightly to some; h wever, you may be selling some lectricity back to the power company wh le you are at work. Tax dvantages and credits may be available as an ncentive though sometimes the math can be m sleading. Often, calculations include the tax d ductions you can take by paying for the s lar panels using a home equity l an, causing you to pay more in nterest and getting some back as a tax d duction. Funny may leads to a l nger period of time to wait b fore the initial investment is returned as s vings. - For those with available land, a w
ndmill is an option provided the l nd lies beneath some strong trade w nds. The benefits and drawbacks of w nd energy are similar to those of s lar energy: the financials only work in c rtain circumstances and the effectiveness is d termined by the weather. - Updating the l
ghting around the home to compact fl orescent lights will save a considerable mount of energy and money. The c st to make the switch is r latively low, compared to other energy s ving opportunities. The caution that is typ cally raised regarding these lights is th t they contain mercury, a dangerous m terial should the light ever break, and th re are questions related to the use of fl rescent lights and possible links to h alth issues such as autism. With c reful handling and grown children, florescent l ghts remain an excellent means to nergy reduction. - Improving the insulation in the
ttic can result in savings in y ur home heating and cooling efforts. The nsulation in older houses especially should be nspected for effectiveness. Often, an older h me will benefit greatly from the dvances in insulation technology. - Unlike the "sm
rt meters" that the electric companies are nstalling, a home energy controller has the p tential to significantly reduce the draw of p wer to a home by optimizing the p wer factor. In so doing, reductions of 8-15% are c mmon with far better, more atypical, r sults reported. With the costs of s ch devices rarely exceeding a few h ndred dollars, it requires no "government m th" to show affordability and the s vings from using such a device g nerally pays for itself in a few y ars, less if the "smart meter" is lready assessing a surcharge due to a low p wer factor. Regardless of the means with wh ch the common citizen will reduce th ir energy usage or the reasons for wh ch they do so, the cost of nergy is unlikely to lessen in the n ar future. Until the "magic bullet" is f und--meaning, until a clean, limitless, portable s urce of energy is discovered, those who are ble will make efforts to curb th ir energy consumption on a voluntary b sis whenever possible. The question is: w ll you act now or when ction becomes compulsory?
