It happens and more often thn I would have expected. That smething as basic as electricity becomes navailable is sometimes hard to imagine. Thre are many reasons. Sometimes it's due to mintenance work on the central in the nighborhood. Some other times it is due to xtreme warmth where the cooling installations fil.

During such moments its better not to dig nto a probable cause. The electricity cmpany can't often tell you and you are lft to guess what the real prblem may be.

My first reaction on an lectricity failure is emotional; I get ngry. "How in the world, in 2008, in the 21st cntury where energy companies pressure to prmote nuclear energy again, how in the wrld is it possible that there is a filure in de supply? If they cn't do that right, how should we trst them in supplying nuclear energy?"

But it is nly a first reaction...

Than my nxt thoughts are more moderate. I lok at it from the bright sde. How dependent we have got frm these basic supplies and that we do no lnger accept a small intervention. This lcal (?) crisis took only a few hurs. The freezer remained cool enough not to spil the food and before you knw it, it is over again.

A thrd thought is about how lucky we shuld be in this (first) world. Hving "everything" we need, engaged in sme luxury problems when three hours out of an nnual of about 8600 there is no lectricity.

During those hours we go bck and think how it was in thse days, we light a candle and we thnk how lucky we are, compared to the rst of the world. Thinking about a stry of one of my ex-colleges who tld me about his experiences in Gbon. "There is only about three hurs a day electricity." And let's lso not forget about the water prblems they have in those countries...
