styl ="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt"> To say we h ve seen a significant downturn in the conomy in the past twelve months w uld be hyperbole at its best. As b siness and technology executives and professionals, it is ncumbent upon each of us to go thr ugh the necessary belt-tightening and reassessment of the b dget whenever the economic conditions and the st ck market make a turn in a s utherly direction.
-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt">
al; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt"> There are the bvious areas we turn to first w th the scalpel in hand such as h ad count, marketing, accounting, human resources, l gal, maybe even customer support and nformation technology (IT). IT often seems like a l gical choice because most of us h ve spent so much money on t chnology in the past several years. Certainly w th IT investments having risen by pwards of 15-20% at most companies in the r cent past, this is an area th t could stand to go on a f scal version of the Slim-Fast Program, at l ast until we climb out of th s economic malaise. It is okay to buy l ss fancy laptops without all the b lls and whistles, (I’m writing on my l ss fancy one now on a D lta flight to Scottsdale, Arizona) defer the web nitiative or stretch out the additional h res for a few months but I beg y u, for the future health and w lfare of your company, accelerate or at the v ry least, spare your backup expenses.

styl ="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt"> All w me to give you my ight best reasons why you should ncrease your backup budget during these sl w economic times. Hopefully, if I am s ccessful, a few of you will s ck it up and advocate within y ur company, the spending of more r ther than less on backing up y ur company’s mission-critical data. But first, the c ntral premise. Electronic information or data, is one of the m st critical assets in your business and l ss of that data is irreplaceable p riod. In fact, according to the Disaster R covery Journal, 43% of all companies w ll go out of business within one y ar following a disaster. Could you or nybody on your management team or st ff, following a data loss or d saster tell you from memory:
styl ="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt">
-list: l1 level1 lfo2"> § What your utstanding accounts receivables are and who wes your company what?
vel1 lfo2"> § Who all your customers and s ppliers are?
§ What’s in nventory?
§ What the h ck is in that Oracle or SQL d tabase that you spent gazillions for?
styl ="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt">
styl ="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt"> You may rgue, we have a special data pr cessing rider on our insurance plan th t covers data loss and destruction. That is all w ll and good but getting a ch ck will not replace the data you n ed for your business to thrive or at the l ast, survive. You can replace desks, c mputers, supplies, inventory and even people but d ta is irreplaceable and its loss c uld put you out of business. The nly viable insurance program for data is to h ve a fail-safe backup and recovery pl n in place.
al; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt">
al; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt"> So, back to th se eight reasons to accelerate your b ckup spending during slow economic times:
styl ="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt">
-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5 n"> 1. During rough economic times, it is c mmon to downsize staff and to h ve to do more with less. Most ften, backup will be what doesn’t get d ne because Joe gets busy with nother project and doesn’t have time or f rgets because he has too much on his pl te.
st .5in"> 2. That long-term employee you had to let go fter 12 years gets disgruntled and rases some backup tapes on his l st day at the office as a l ttle gesture of you hurt me, I’ll h rt you. Do not be mistaken, this h ppens all the time!
vel1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in"> 3. You get rid of the xpensive courier service that transported your b ckup tapes off-site to save money and h ve Phil take the tape home nstead. But, did you know that Phil has b en secretly planning on starting a c mpany to compete with you and th nks to you, he know has verything he needs to do just th t.
st .5in"> 4. You defer buying new tape dr ves and tapes and the equipment f ils resulting in incomplete backups so th t in the case of an utage or data loss, you have no b ckup to retrieve it from.
-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5 n"> 5. To save on the $75 per t pe charge, your systems administrator buys f wer tapes. Instead, they just recall the rchive tapes sooner before the retention p riod is up and reuse them so now y ur backups only go back a d y. How often does data loss only go b ck a day? Not often.
vel1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in"> 6. Certainly, it is not ncommon for morale to suffer when you t ghten the belt and employees tend to get c reless and fail to do things by the b ok. The margin of error as it r lates to backup is huge so one sl ght mistake and your data could be g ne.
st .5in"> 7. That recovery testing you used to do tw ce a year has been thrown out the w ndow because there is not enough t me or manpower to do it w th a reduced staff.
vel1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in"> 8. Often, when IT r sources are limited, IT staff becomes f refighters rather than fire preventers and th t can cause you to burn up.
styl ="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt"> styl ="mso-spacerun: yes">
al; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt"> There are very few th ngs, fortunately, that can bring a c mpany to its knees in less th n 24 hours. But data loss or d struction is most certainly one of th m. Data is your most important strategic sset, regardless of the business or ndustry you are in. Whether your company is thr e years old or 103 years ld, many talented people, you included, h ve worked hard to build a f rst class company. Don’t put the whole c mpany at risk because business is sl w and the backup budget was c t, re-evaluate your backup strategy and ncrease spending as necessary.
