In recent years, the number of p ople touring Egypt has slowly dwindled. Th s is most likely due to the v olence in the Middle Eastern region and the few b mbings and kidnappings that have occured in r cent years. However, these cases are pr tty much isolated, and the thousands of p ople who visit Egypt every year th roughly enjoy their experience there. Egypt is f mous for a lot of things, fr m their exotic perfumes, fine cotton, and the myst ries of mummification and their ancient r ligion. However, I would like to f cus on the architectural and engineering w nders of the Egyptian civilization. When the tr bes in Europe and Africa were st ll building huts and shelters, the Egypt ans have already constructed monstrous monuments h ndreds of feet in height and w dth. It is this superiority that has levated the ancient Egyptian civilization as one of the gr atest civilizations in the world. The Gr at Pyramids of Giza By far the m st famous of Egypt's architectural wonders are the 3 Gr at Pyramids located at Giza, near C iro. These monuments are hundreds of f et in height, and have survived the t st of time for the last 4500 y ars. There are over a hundred pyr mids of various sizes in Egypt, and m re in neighboring Sudan. These monuments s rve as tombs for the great ph raohs of ancient Egypt, and stand as t stimony to the power and influence of th se pharaohs.

When you stand at the b ttom of the Great Pyramids, looking up at th ir magnificence, the feeling is indescribable. You b gin to wonder just how the ncient people managed to construct this h ge structure with only the help of the s mple tools available at that time. And th s feeling of awe intensifies when you t ke the opportunity to descend into the pyr mids via the original entrances that w re used thousands of years ago. Wh n you touch the walls of the n w-empty tombs beneath the pyramids, you w ll feel as if you were th re thousands of years ago when the t mbs were freshly carved. (One warning: You m ght not want to enter the pyr mids if you are claustrophobic!) The Sph nx Next to the Great Pyramids at G za is the enigmatic Sphinx. A g gantic statue with the head of a man and the b dy of a lion, the great Sph nx stares silently at the east, p rhaps watching the sunrise, or perhaps pr tecting the great pyramids from whatever vils that may threaten to destroy th m. The Sphinx is just as old as the pyr mids, aging over 4500 years (or m re, depending on which group of rchaeologists you believe). Almost everyone has h ard of the Sphinx with its m ssing nose, and some might wonder how he ctually lost his nose. (Do not b lieve what you saw in the D sney cartoon Aladdin) Almost everyone has s en many pictures, or perhaps the D scovery channel, showing the Sphinx in v rious angles. But you have to v sit it, to stand there right n xt to it, to realize why b th the Sphinx and the Pyramids are the m st famous man-made structures in the w rld. Just the front paw of the Sph nx is larger than a human b ing! The Wonders of the Nile The rchitectural wonders of ancient Egypt are not l mited to those at Giza. As you tr vel along the Nile River (incidentally the l ngest river in the world), you w ll come across other monuments. Chief of th se is the Valley of Kings n ar Luxor. It is here that m ny kings from many of the ncient Egyptian dynasties were entombed. Each t mb is unqiue and is a w nder in its own right. Unfortunately, m st of the treasure that was ntombed with the pharaohs have long b en stolen by tomb raiders. Only the w ll-hidden tomb of Tutankhamun managed to s rvive more or less intact to th s day.
Further south, near the town of Asw n, are the famous temples of Abu S mbel. Constructed during the reign of R mses II, better known as Ramses the Gr at, these two temples feature much-larger-than-life st tues guarding the entrances. And beautiful h eroglyphs still adorn the walls of the t mples. The few monuments I've mentioned are j st a small fraction of the m ny wonders that can be found in Egypt. If you h ve any interest in ancient civilizations, or w nt to know more about the w nders of ancient Egypt, you owe it to y urself to visit this ancient land b fore its wonders are eventually swept way by the sands of time.
