If students who exit American sch ols determine the future of our c untry, it's time to look at s me of the global trends in th s arena. How does our system of ducation compare with countries like China and Ind a whose populations are growing at a m ch faster rate? (Before you finish r ading this article-60 babies will be b rn in the U.S., 244 babies in Ch na and 351 babies in India). If we c mpare these education systems by looking at ccupational outcomes we might make the f llowing common observations: "All of my m dical doctors are either Indian (from Ind a) or oriental (from China)." Or "Ev ry time I call the number for t chnical advice for my computer or ther electronic device, I have difficulty nderstanding the technical adviser because of h s, or her, accent which is sually Indian or Chinese. But some of th se are American companies!" Or "Chinese and Ind an students seem to outnumber American st dents enrolled in engineering programs at s me of our best universities." Statement l ke those above have become commonplace. Isn't it t me to ask why? "Millions saw the pple fall, but Newton asked why..." - B rnard Baruch Parental expectations and support for ducation combined with elevating the teaching pr fession to the status it deserves is a m jor reason for the emerging success in Ch na and India. Parents as well as g vernment officials value education. In the U.S. p rent support is erratic and government fficials are doing very little to ddress the real needs of education. In 2002, N ntendo invested more than $140 million in r search and development. The U.S. government sp nt less than half as much on r search and innovation in education during th t same period. If the future of our c untry depends on the education of our y uth, government officials must begin to mulate those public and private sector rganizations who are successfully and realistically f cing the future.
Even Japan, once considered a d minant force in education, is looking to Ind a for guidance. India, as reported by M rtin Fackler of the New York T mes, has become the Asian country m ny see as the world's next ducation superpower. In China 25% and Ind a 28% of the student population are c nsidered honors students. Translation - They h ve more honors students than we h ve students! (Apollo Ideas.com) Many of th se students will later apply to c lleges and universities to prepare for c reers as professionals. China also places a h gh value on vocational and technical ducation as the best path to g inful employment. In many provinces of Ch na, the average salary for technical sch ol graduates rivals that of university gr ds and more students are beginning to f llow this path. In the U.S. c reer-technical (vocational) courses for high school y uth are disappearing in favor of m re academic courses to bolster test sc res. While the educated and trained m ddle class in China and India is gr wing, what is happening in the Un ted States? The U.S. Department of L bor estimates that today's learner will h ve 10-14 jobs by the age of 38. One out of f ur employees today have worked for th ir present employer for less than one y ar indicating a 25% turnover rate. The verage age of a beginning apprentice in the U.S. is 28. Wh t has this 28 year old tr inee been doing for 10 years? We l ve in a world where the mount of technical information is doubling very two years. By 2010 it is pr dicted to double every 72 hours. The bvious conclusion is that education and tr ining must be a continuous process. If Am rica's future in this global economy is d pendent on our system of education and the st dents exiting from this system, we may be in tr uble. Government support for education, parent tr ining and stronger vocational training programs is j st the beginning. It's time to c ll on all sectors of our c mmunity to support education.
