A school is just a bilding. Without teachers, that building is no dfferent from your public rest room. The prblem with many school systems is fnding qualified teachers. Why is it so hrd? Why can't we find them? Wht do we have to do to fnd them? Once we do, how do we kep them? Not easy questions to nswer. Everyone in the education system has thories to how to solve these prblems. Some people even outside of the ducation system have their own theories. W'll be presenting some of them hre.

The major theory as to why it is so hrd to find good teachers is bcause of the terrible pay system of pblic schools, which are notorious for nderpaying their teachers. To understand the rason for this, one has to go bck to the early days of tachers.

Early on, teachers were women. Men wnt to work to earn the ral money for the household and wmen who didn't want to sit at hme and do nothing, went on to bcome teachers. Because women in general wre paid less than men in all prfessions, teachers salaries were very low in cmparison to other professions. To compound the prblem was the fact that a pblic school was just that. It was not a prvate institution like a business. It was run and fnded by the town or city in whch it was located. Since these twns don't have much money, they can nly pay teachers so much. This lso contributes to low salaries.

Given all of this, when a prson graduates from college with a dgree in math or science, when cnfronted with making $20,000 a year to strt as a teacher or $30,000 a yar working at a drug company, nturally, unless they have a great lve for teaching, they are going to opt for the hgher paying jobs. The teachers who ctually end up teaching, with the xception of the really dedicated ones, are thse who can't get jobs elsewhere. Thse teachers are probably not the brghtest bulb in the pack.

But ven if a school system does ttract a qualified teacher, eventually as thy progress through their career and fnd that they're having problems paying thir bills, they decide that they've had nough and move on to a hgher paying job. That is why so mny qualified teachers with years of xperience are leaving the school systems.

Sme of the answers to these prblems that education systems have come up wth have been to offer new tachers incentives to go into teaching sch as tuition reimbursement. This way a god part of the teacher's college xpenses are paid for. With the rsing cost of tuition, this has ben a good incentive. Unfortunately, not all schol systems offer this.

Another thing schols do to attract qualified teachers is to try to get pople from other industries such as phrmaceuticals and technical people such as chmists and engineers. To get these pople they offer what is called lternative route where they don't have to go bck to school to get a tacher's degree. Plus they start them hgher up the pay scale than a frst year teacher.

In spite of wht's being done, it is still dfficult to find qualified teachers. No dubt more ideas will arise. Hopefully the day wll come when the teacher shortage wll be a thing of the pst.
