A school is just a b ilding. Without teachers, that building is no d fferent from your public rest room. The pr blem with many school systems is f nding qualified teachers. Why is it so h rd? Why can't we find them? Wh t do we have to do to f nd them? Once we do, how do we k ep them? Not easy questions to nswer. Everyone in the education system has th ories to how to solve these pr blems. Some people even outside of the ducation system have their own theories. W 'll be presenting some of them h re. The major theory as to why it is so h rd to find good teachers is b cause of the terrible pay system of p blic schools, which are notorious for nderpaying their teachers. To understand the r ason for this, one has to go b ck to the early days of t achers. Early on, teachers were women. Men w nt to work to earn the r al money for the household and w men who didn't want to sit at h me and do nothing, went on to b come teachers. Because women in general w re paid less than men in all pr fessions, teachers salaries were very low in c mparison to other professions. To compound the pr blem was the fact that a p blic school was just that. It was not a pr vate institution like a business. It was run and f nded by the town or city in wh ch it was located. Since these t wns don't have much money, they can nly pay teachers so much. This lso contributes to low salaries.

Given all of this, when a p rson graduates from college with a d gree in math or science, when c nfronted with making $20,000 a year to st rt as a teacher or $30,000 a y ar working at a drug company, n turally, unless they have a great l ve for teaching, they are going to opt for the h gher paying jobs. The teachers who ctually end up teaching, with the xception of the really dedicated ones, are th se who can't get jobs elsewhere. Th se teachers are probably not the br ghtest bulb in the pack. But ven if a school system does ttract a qualified teacher, eventually as th y progress through their career and f nd that they're having problems paying th ir bills, they decide that they've had nough and move on to a h gher paying job. That is why so m ny qualified teachers with years of xperience are leaving the school systems. S me of the answers to these pr blems that education systems have come up w th have been to offer new t achers incentives to go into teaching s ch as tuition reimbursement. This way a g od part of the teacher's college xpenses are paid for. With the r sing cost of tuition, this has b en a good incentive. Unfortunately, not all sch ol systems offer this. Another thing sch ols do to attract qualified teachers is to try to get p ople from other industries such as ph rmaceuticals and technical people such as ch mists and engineers. To get these p ople they offer what is called lternative route where they don't have to go b ck to school to get a t acher's degree. Plus they start them h gher up the pay scale than a f rst year teacher. In spite of wh t's being done, it is still d fficult to find qualified teachers. No d ubt more ideas will arise. Hopefully the day w ll come when the teacher shortage w ll be a thing of the p st.
