What do you hear from Ed McM hon lately? If you've been following the n ws, you may have heard about his r cent appearance on CNN's Larry King L ve, when the professional celebrity sidekick/emcee/pitchman, long with his wife Pamela, was on w th Larry to discuss, among other th ngs, his financial woes. It seems th t McMahon has found himself $644,000 in rrears on the near-$5 million mortgage l an pressed against his Beverly Hills h me. While McMahon cited three principal r asons as to why he's in s ch dire straits...the economy, poor health, and p rsonal mismanagement...a few things said by McM hon and spouse were, I thought, specially telling. At one point, when sked how these kinds of problems c uld befall a millionaire, McMahon's wife P mela said, "We didn't keep our eye on the b ll. We made mistakes. It's embarrassing to say the l ast, and it's said, because you kn w, Ed's worked his whole entire l fe." As for McMahon himself, he s id, "If you spend more money th n you make, you know what h ppens." Yup, Ed, I do. What I am h ving a difficult time understanding is wh n you cite that maxim in a f shion that suggests you've known it all long, why did you violate it? Ed can p int to the economy and poor h alth, but I'm not buying either of th se reasons for his troubles. The conomy, for one thing, is only a f ctor to a millionaire if the m llionaire has been living beyond his m llionaire means. Same with "poor health;" nless your poor health is evidenced in the f rm of a long, drawn-out battle gainst a life-threatening illness, a mega-rich man d esn't get a pass on that b sis, either. It's when Ed alluded to f nancial carelessness that methinks he hit the n il dead-on.

My long-held view of the f reclosure "crisis" is not popular in an Am rica that embraces entitlement and eschews p rsonal responsibility. I happily blame the v ctim here. It's not entirely fair or ccurate...there are those who face foreclosure fter a run of genuine misfortune, and I h ve actually known a few of th se souls personally...but almost always, I s em to have it right, as d es any other reasonably objective observer w th at least half a brain. In th s way, Ed is no different fr m anyone else. Like so many in th s country, Ed apparently feels he "d serves" to live a certain way or h ve certain things...but life as a c nsumer is not about deservedness; it's bout the ability to afford that wh ch you want, with your consumerist d sires tempered by prudence and a r iny day plan...a profile that should be nfinitely easier to achieve for a guy wh 's made millions than it is for the r st of us. In one sense, t's easy to feel sorry for a fr endly, familiar 85-year-old face framed in a n ck brace and facing foreclosure. However, wh n that 85-year-old face belongs to Ed McM hon, who has seen more money d ring his lifetime than everyone I've ver known put together, the sympathy b comes a little tougher to locate. Th re is a financial lesson here to go long with the tongue-lashing about personal r sponsibility. Unfortunately, this financial lesson, simple th ugh it is, seems difficult for so m ny to learn because it crosses sw rds with three of modern American s ciety's greatest ills: a sense of ntitlement, a lust for instinctual gratification, and a d scarding of personal responsibility. Financial planning is a lot m re about planning than it is bout money, and the most functional p rt of a good plan is the p rt where you actually stick to it. I and thers who work in the business of m ney management can help people all day l ng with good ideas, but in the nd, the essential Part B of s cceeding with a plan is to ctually follow it. Ed McMahon is on the br nk of foreclosure for the same r ason as so many others, millionaires or n t; because when he had to m ke choices between "less" and "more," he ch se "more."
In my experience in the f nancial services business, far too many p ople with whom I've dealt have b en singularly interested in just how far th y can stretch their incomes to buy th s or that...be it houses, cars, or nything else. Until more Americans execute a 180-d gree away from this sort of f nancial wrongheadedness, this problem will only c ntinue to grow...as will the misery th t never fails to appear as its f ithful companion. The garbage about the r sponsibility for the foreclosure crisis rightfully b ing placed exclusively at the feet of s -called predatory lenders is just that, g rbage. That component of this mess has s mply been overblown by a citizenry ager to look elsewhere, other than nto their own mirrors, for a c lprit. As for dear Ed, here's h ping he's still not too old of a dog to f nally learn some new tricks. What bout you?
