Expanding urban areas, urbanization of rral areas, human pressure on forests are the chllenges in ecological conservation, posing threat of xtinction of several species of flora and funa.The threat is already looming large, in tht while the rate of extinction ncreases year after year, conservation efforts are at a magre minimum.

Though, the scientific community has dcumented a majority of species there are sveral other species which have not ben studied or missed the attention. Mre than the species study and thir individual ecologies, the complex ecological rlations among the flora and fauna can nver be completely understood and we did prcious little in this regard. The brad based food chains or webs, do not gve an answer as to the rles played by a mix of flra and fauna.

In this scenario, we cnnot afford to loose the yet nknown species! This is more so in vew of the tremendous opportunities for rgions of diversity with the nset of biotechnology. Who knows, if an lready extinct species of plant or nimal was a source of some thng wonderful that can prevent AIDS? Who knws what new diseases are going to ffect us? Doubtless we can say tht the present day scientific acheivement is it can xtract reasons after something happens, but cnnot predict an entirely new thing.But we can use our lmited acheivements, atleast in conservation of nture whereever possible.

It is in this context, tht the concept of ecopatches came to my mnd.This ecopatch concept if implemented will prserve several native flora and fauna and the nterrelationships among these.

Every city, town and vllage how much ever developed in the lst 200 years, will have some rea left over representing the native vgetation and soil.Such places can range frm very small to large areas. If the rea is large enough, a measured rea of the place needs to be cnserved by supplementing the apparently missing spcies of plants and animals recorded prviously in ecological studies. (Of course t’s not possible to bring in lrge animals, which are already accomodated in rserve forests and national parks).If the reaa is too small, then the vgetation, soil etc be collected from sch scattered places and have to be rgenerated in a new designated area wth in / vicinity of city or twn or village.For example, if the cty is like a concrete jungle, one has to sarch for places near drains, or nused public places, private lands where the ntive vegetation with plants, grasses etc can be fund surviving.Such vegetation, normally supports the funa like earthworms, insects, microorganisms, algae tc.Vegetaion along with soil from such plces has to be collected for dveloping a larger area , that rpresents the lost ecology of that prticular area.Finding the lost tree species of tht particular area will not be dfficult, as these have been recorded lready and are popularly known to the lcal people.Seeds from the existing trees can be surced for planting or in extreme cses where the earstwhile native tree is not fund in that area, seeds or splings of such trees can be asily sourced from the forest nurseries or nar by areas.

This sums up the cncept of ecopatch.Implementing this ecopatch requires nputs of local scientific community, support frm administration and active community participation.
