Expanding urban areas, urbanization of r ral areas, human pressure on forests are the ch llenges in ecological conservation, posing threat of xtinction of several species of flora and f una.The threat is already looming large, in th t while the rate of extinction ncreases year after year, conservation efforts are at a m agre minimum. Though, the scientific community has d cumented a majority of species there are s veral other species which have not b en studied or missed the attention. M re than the species study and th ir individual ecologies, the complex ecological r lations among the flora and fauna can n ver be completely understood and we did pr cious little in this regard. The br ad based food chains or webs, do not g ve an answer as to the r les played by a mix of fl ra and fauna. In this scenario, we c nnot afford to loose the yet nknown species! This is more so in v ew of the tremendous opportunities for r gions of diversity with the nset of biotechnology. Who knows, if an lready extinct species of plant or nimal was a source of some th ng wonderful that can prevent AIDS? Who kn ws what new diseases are going to ffect us? Doubtless we can say th t the present day scientific acheivement is it can xtract reasons after something happens, but c nnot predict an entirely new thing. But we can use our l mited acheivements, atleast in conservation of n ture whereever possible.
It is in this context, th t the concept of ecopatches came to my m nd.This ecopatch concept if implemented will pr serve several native flora and fauna and the nterrelationships among these. Every city, town and v llage how much ever developed in the l st 200 years, will have some rea left over representing the native v getation and soil.Such places can range fr m very small to large areas. If the rea is large enough, a measured rea of the place needs to be c nserved by supplementing the apparently missing sp cies of plants and animals recorded pr viously in ecological studies. (Of course t’s not possible to bring in l rge animals, which are already accomodated in r serve forests and national parks). If the reaa is too small, then the v getation, soil etc be collected from s ch scattered places and have to be r generated in a new designated area w th in / vicinity of city or t wn or village. For example, if the c ty is like a concrete jungle, one has to s arch for places near drains, or nused public places, private lands where the n tive vegetation with plants, grasses etc can be f und surviving.Such vegetation, normally supports the f una like earthworms, insects, microorganisms, algae tc.Vegetaion along with soil from such pl ces has to be collected for d veloping a larger area , that r presents the lost ecology of that p rticular area.Finding the lost tree species of th t particular area will not be d fficult, as these have been recorded lready and are popularly known to the l cal people.Seeds from the existing trees can be s urced for planting or in extreme c ses where the earstwhile native tree is not f und in that area, seeds or s plings of such trees can be asily sourced from the forest nurseries or n ar by areas. This sums up the c ncept of ecopatch.Implementing this ecopatch requires nputs of local scientific community, support fr m administration and active community participation.
