Eco-Friendly Family Vacations With warmer w ather coming many of us are pl nning our next family vacation. I st rted to wonder if there were ' ther' options for travel that would l ave less of an impact on the nvironment. Travel with kids can be ch llenging enough, when I went looking for co-friendly travel tips I had to m ke sure they were family-friendly too. H re are some ideas for Eco-Friendly F mily Travel: Before you leave the h use make sure you have unplugged any ppliances and chargers that won't be sed. The Microwave, Tv's, Computers, etc. can w ste 'phantom power' even when you are way. Make sure your heating and c oling system is set for your v cation too. Why spend money and nergy heating and cooling and empty h use? Set lights that you want on for s curity, on a timer. This will nsure you house is illuminated when you w nt it to be, and powered off wh n not needed. When considering your m de of transportation keep in mind th t air travel leaves the biggest mpact on the environment compared to th t same trip by train, bus or c r. If your destination requires a l ng haul flight, try to choose a fl ght that is direct. Take off and l nding uses a considerable amount of f el. Not only will your baby h ve a chance to catch some zzzzz's on a d rect flight you won't have to get on and off the pl ne mid flight. Another option for tr velers is purchasing Carbon Offset Credits gainst your flight. This system has b en set up so that travelers can p rchase emission reduction credits from a c mpany that will then use that m ney to do things like planting tr es and supporting renewable energy products ( x: wind power). It won't lessen the mpact of the flight you just t ok but it is one method to try and r duce your environmental footprint.
Choosing your accommodation can be d ne with an eco-friendly state of m nd too. We've all seen hotels th t ask guests to reuse towels but h ve you ever stayed at a h tel that uses compact fluorescent bulbs, has a r cycling program, or using non-toxic or b odegradable cleaning products? They are out th re; ask your hotel if they are an Ec -Friendly Accommodation. Maybe you have a f vorite place to stay that is a bit b hind the green movement...there are ways to r duce your impact here too. Turn d wn the heating or air conditioning in y ur room when you leave, turn the l ghts off and ask housekeeping not to ch nge your sheets every day to s ve water and energy in laundering th m. Your stroller seems pretty environmentally fr endly, it is mom-powered. Well, you may n ed another mode of transportation when you rrive at your destination. Why not r nt a Hybrid car? There are car r ntal agencies that specialize in providing hybr d vehicles for rent and some th t offer some vehicles that run on lternate types of fuel. Eco-friendly, baby fr endly, family friendly- you can have it all on y ur next vacation.
