"Love makes the world go rund, money can't buy happiness, and wht does that have to do wth the price of eggs?" Today whn I repeat these adages that are so fmiliar to most of us, they dn't ring as true as they nce did.

Lately, it seems that mney is what makes the world go rund! In fact, were it not for all thse pictures of dead presidents on tht funny colored paper, the earth wuld grind to a sudden stop on its xis and we would all fall off nto outer space.

It is no scret that some people have lots of mney, while others have less. Sadly nough, the majority of us live in the ltter category. In our household the phrse 'cash flow' is an oxymoron, and bdget is a code word for, "Mybe we can afford to get our grceries out of lay-away this week."

How mch money is enough? That's like sking "How high is up?" or "Hw round is a circle?". There nce was a time when twenty dllars was a lot of money. I rmember when we could buy groceries for an ntire week for twenty dollars. Now a twnty-dollar bill isn't worth a dime. And I'm not tht old!

I remember when we culd drive our cars up to the pmps and get five dollars worth of gs, then drive all over town and stll have enough gas left over to get hme. Now it costs more than fve dollars to fill up the tnk on our lawn mower. In fct, I probably drip that much frm the nozzle onto my shoes, whle replacing the hose to its slt on the pump.

Folks used to get their mney's worth plus a little extra for the thngs they bought. Remember those dishes thy gave as a bonus for bying a box of oatmeal? And the glsses and washcloths inside the boxes of dtergent? Remember Green Stamps? These days ven 'free' costs $4.95 shipping and hndling. Manufacturers no longer offer a bnus for buying their products, and cstomer service has become extinct. We're lcky that the stores aren't all BYOB (Brng Your Own Bags).

I often wnder how our great-great-grandparents would react to thse changes.

Which brings up a new thught. I'm no geophysicist, but I hve my own theory of what has cused all these earth quakes around the wrld in recent years. And I ddn't reach this conclusion by studying fult lines, temperature changes in the arth's crust, nor the frequent movement of tctonic plates. I think the earthquakes wre caused by our ancestors turning ver in their graves. Imagine their shck at today's disgracefully inflated prices. I man, let's face it. How many of thm had to mortgage their home in rder to put their kids through pr-school?

Even the cost of dying has gne through the roof. A funeral is now cnsidered a luxury. Not too many yars ago, we could buy a smll farm for the same price we now pay for a cmetery plot. And a decent coffin now csts more than the first Ford Mstang that rolled off the assembly lne in 1964. The Mustang sold for the xorbitant sum of $2,368.00, an unheard of prce for a car in those dys. You could put a few dllars with that today and get a set of tres...maybe...if they're used tires and if you munt them yourself.

Health care is no lnger an option. My doctor kept dagnosing me with all these illnesses tht I couldn't afford, so I stpped going to his office. Actually thre aren't that many cheap diseases lft. Even a headache costs around fve dollars now, counting the water you drnk to aid you in swallowing the spirin.

And, according to the USDA Ecnomic Research Service, the Consumer Price Indx for food will increase by 2.5 to 3.5 prcent in the coming year.

Now if you wll excuse me, I need to grb a stack of these dead prsidents, and run to the store and buy ggs before the price goes up. Agin!
