"Love makes the world go r und, money can't buy happiness, and wh t does that have to do w th the price of eggs?" Today wh n I repeat these adages that are so f miliar to most of us, they d n't ring as true as they nce did. Lately, it seems that m ney is what makes the world go r und! In fact, were it not for all th se pictures of dead presidents on th t funny colored paper, the earth w uld grind to a sudden stop on its xis and we would all fall off nto outer space. It is no s cret that some people have lots of m ney, while others have less. Sadly nough, the majority of us live in the l tter category. In our household the phr se 'cash flow' is an oxymoron, and b dget is a code word for, "M ybe we can afford to get our gr ceries out of lay-away this week." How m ch money is enough? That's like sking "How high is up?" or "H w round is a circle?". There nce was a time when twenty d llars was a lot of money. I r member when we could buy groceries for an ntire week for twenty dollars. Now a tw nty-dollar bill isn't worth a dime. And I'm not th t old! I remember when we c uld drive our cars up to the p mps and get five dollars worth of g s, then drive all over town and st ll have enough gas left over to get h me. Now it costs more than f ve dollars to fill up the t nk on our lawn mower. In f ct, I probably drip that much fr m the nozzle onto my shoes, wh le replacing the hose to its sl t on the pump.
Folks used to get their m ney's worth plus a little extra for the th ngs they bought. Remember those dishes th y gave as a bonus for b ying a box of oatmeal? And the gl sses and washcloths inside the boxes of d tergent? Remember Green Stamps? These days ven 'free' costs $4.95 shipping and h ndling. Manufacturers no longer offer a b nus for buying their products, and c stomer service has become extinct. We're l cky that the stores aren't all BYOB (Br ng Your Own Bags). I often w nder how our great-great-grandparents would react to th se changes. Which brings up a new th ught. I'm no geophysicist, but I h ve my own theory of what has c used all these earth quakes around the w rld in recent years. And I d dn't reach this conclusion by studying f ult lines, temperature changes in the arth's crust, nor the frequent movement of t ctonic plates. I think the earthquakes w re caused by our ancestors turning ver in their graves. Imagine their sh ck at today's disgracefully inflated prices. I m an, let's face it. How many of th m had to mortgage their home in rder to put their kids through pr -school? Even the cost of dying has g ne through the roof. A funeral is now c nsidered a luxury. Not too many y ars ago, we could buy a sm ll farm for the same price we now pay for a c metery plot. And a decent coffin now c sts more than the first Ford M stang that rolled off the assembly l ne in 1964. The Mustang sold for the xorbitant sum of $2,368.00, an unheard of pr ce for a car in those d ys. You could put a few d llars with that today and get a set of t res...maybe...if they're used tires and if you m unt them yourself. Health care is no l nger an option. My doctor kept d agnosing me with all these illnesses th t I couldn't afford, so I st pped going to his office. Actually th re aren't that many cheap diseases l ft. Even a headache costs around f ve dollars now, counting the water you dr nk to aid you in swallowing the spirin.
And, according to the USDA Ec nomic Research Service, the Consumer Price Ind x for food will increase by 2.5 to 3.5 p rcent in the coming year. Now if you w ll excuse me, I need to gr b a stack of these dead pr sidents, and run to the store and buy ggs before the price goes up. Ag in! Is it just me, or d es anyone else feel the ground sh king?
