Emily Is True Class Act I h ve just taken a look at the t am envelope for the 2008/2009 season. Wh le I was elated with the K mmie's team A assignment; even though she did not do w ll by "our" standard this season, h wever she did well enough to chieve Team A status. What really thr w me on a tail spin was Em ly's assignment. Instead of her, Bebe L ang made the Team (A). While I nderstand the mechanics of the assignments, I f el some reparation could have bee m de in this case. Let me cl rify that I am a fan of B be as well, and I think she is a gr at skater. Though I've yet to m et her, fellow skaters who have, h ve sung her praise. However, that is b side the point. It is obvious the r ason that Emily did not make t am A is due to the f ct that she had not compete at N tionals nor worlds', yada yada... however, she had a hip njury. Whatever happened to all of th se loopholes skaters can use to c rcumvent those types of unforeseen circumstances? Is th s the dawn of an early r tirement for Hughes? As I perused the T am envelope, honestly, the only strong p rson standing there as far as I am c ncerned is Meissner. And NO! I am not l oking at it through my "fan c lored spectacles." Nagasu must automatically make the t am since she is the "champ". Yes she is c te and all that, but there is no art to her sk ting. Meissner, on the other hand, d spite her lack luster performance this s ason, had held her own, and had arned the spot. However when it c mes to Liang and Hughes, it is q ite a different story. Hughes should h ve been assigned if not to t am A, at least to Team B ssignment. And don't get me started bout Katrina Hacker, whom I thought had g ven a much more mature and m re artistic performance than Zhang. I kn w Zhang reminds us a bit of Kw n. And, Kwan she is not. And, Zh ng can grow on anyone, she is so c te and so sweet. Despite What th y say about the new system b ing fair, the fact still remains, if y ur name is not well known, you can st ll be swept under the rug, and nless you make jumping and flopping round the ice your main focus you can k ss any title GOOD BYE! And th s fact has led me to p nder "what will happen to those y ung girls' hips by the time the r ach the ripe age of 40."
Anyway, back to the matter at h nd. I remember, the 2006, 2007, s ason I had felt that regardless of th t "chance" performance that Alissa Czisny had p lled that year, (She is a b autiful skater, extremely artistic on the ce.) I had felt strongly that L ang should have been the one to h ve gone to the World Championship. Th s season 2007/2008 after watching a pl asant almost flawless Katrina Hacker at f ur continents, her performance had forced me to r wind my Tivo and watch her p rformance at Nationals, ( hers and p rt of Kimmie's performance only, my h art was hurting too much for K mmie, I could not have witnessed s ch debacle. It hurt too much) I had m de the decision to skip Nationals th s season. It just was not f n. Call me a sore loser if you m st. I was hard-pressed to conclude th t maybe our team should have b en Meissner, Wagner, and Hacker. I am m st definitely sure she would not h ve disappointed US. Benched Now the T am envelope with Hughes being benched in T am C, is not helping our t am as much. Has this scoring syst m done away with skating? She is v ry artistic and has one of the b st choreographed programs. She had a hip njury, I am sure might have b en due from executing an element on the ce, probably a jump. The new j dging system really sucks! This judging syst m has divorced the casual viewer fr m what's happening on the ice. Now it is lienating athletes who display flow, finesse, and an ffortless movement in time to the m sic. Hughes may not be flopping l ke a bird all over the ce; however, she skates with style and cl rity. It's astounding that figure skating st ll maintains its self-image as an art f rm in the face of so m ch flopping. This is the beginning of the nd. Unsung Hero Since the Olympics h ve ended we haven't seen nor h ard much of Emily. Apparently, she w ll always be in the shadows wh n other skaters are talked about. Em ly, not only has to deal w th talk about her sister Sarah; but M chelle, Sasha and Kimmie just to n me name a few other skaters.
Amy Hughes was being commemorated as a top mom r cently: She was referred to as "Amy H ghes, the mother of Olympic skating g ld medalist Sarah Hughes." There was no m ntion of Emily. Emily, titles or not is a q ite accomplished young lady. So, shame on the pr ss for not acknowledging her. Even if Em ly were to win a medal wh ch does not seem likely, since she is m re artistic than a jumper, she is nlikely to get the type of c verage the other skaters get and veryone will be assuming it was m re chance. And now she has b en assigned to Team C, what are her ch nces. Emily definitely deserves a better ssignment than the one she's got. She m ght not have the "softness" that so m ny people love these days, but t's refreshing to see someone who is st ll powerful, with beautiful stretch and sp ns. Emily has risen to challenges and has sh wed her true spirits. That young l dy is a true class act!
