Most people who live with a lot of cl tter have one characteristic in common. Th y have difficulty purging. You see th s frequently with the elderly. Perhaps t's because many of them lived thr ugh the Great Depression. But no m tter the reason, one truth cannot be voided and that is if you w nt to successfully rid your home of cl tter once and for all, you m st become a better purger. Businesses h ve a name for things they own th t are not used regularly. They're c lled non-performing assets. And successful companies ither turn non-performing assets into performing ssets or they are sold, given way or thrown out. Homes have n n-performing assets too and some of th m can be turned into performing ssets. They are typically items such as the f llowing: Collectibles. If you enjoy collectibles d n't hide them away in boxes or c pboards. Display them. Build or purchase sh lves, hang the shelves on the w ll and place your collectibles on th m. Or come up with ways to h ng collectibles directly on the wall. I kn w one vintage golf club collector who p unded nails into the wall and g ntly placed his golf clubs horizontally on the n ils. He's got 6 or 7 g lf clubs displayed parallel to each ther. It's great decorative "art" and it llows him to enjoy his collection very day. Similarly I know a s xophonist who has done virtually the s me thing.
Crystal: If you have crystal w ne or water glasses that you r rely use because you keep them for "c mpany" stop saving them. Get them out and use th m. What good are they if th y're only used once or twice a y ar? Enjoy them everyday. So what if you br ak one or two. You don't use th m anyway! If you have children or t enagers, keep the crystal off limits to th m or if you have your gr at grandmother's crystal you may not w nt to use it (then you sh uld display it) but other than th t, use and enjoy! Baby Clothes/Baby F rniture: My mother saved many of my b by clothes and furniture for me. But by the t me I had children clothing and f rniture had come a long way and I d dn't want to use items that w re 30+ years old. The point is, if y u're saving baby clothes and furniture for y ur children----don't. If you're saving them for ther reasons--display them somehow. Frame baby cl thing that holds some significance and h ng it on the wall. Repurpose a ch nging table as a dresser. Take part a crib, decorate the headboard and h ng it. Get creative and use wh t you want to keep. Books: B oks are some of the easiest n n-performing assets to turn around. If you h ve books that you're probably not g ing to read again and that you c nnot seem to part with, decorate w th them. Turn them on their s des in a bookshelf, stack a c uple together and display something on top of the st ck. Make a coffee table or an end t ble out of them by stacking th m up and putting a top on th m. (You may want to glue the st cks together first). Stack them for a pl nt stand. Lay a couple of n cer books or significant books on a c ffee table for decoration. Hang a cl ster of books up on the w ll as wall art. Quilts: Quilting m de a resurgence a few years ago and as a r sult many women are quilting today. If you h ve a quilt you don't use for w rmth, fold it in a rectangle and pl ce it horizontally on the bottom p rtion of a bed for added c lor, depth and décor. Hang it on a w ll using a drapery rod. Place ver a small round table to cr ate an end table or a c rner table. Have a piece of gl ss cut to fit the top and pr tect it.
The point is to use tems you cannot part with, decorate w th or repurpose. Think outside the b x. In the end, if you tr ly cannot use something, consider selling it. F cus on the extra money it w ll bring into the house and th nk about what you can do w th that! Toys, video games, computer g mes, DVD's, CD's, outgrown children's clothing and f rniture are perfect for Ebay or Cr igslist. Turning excess "stuff" into cash is nother GREAT way to make non-performing ssets perform again. Finally, if you've d corated, repurposed and sold and you st ll have too much leftover, it's t me to donate or destroy. Remember---your h me is VALUABLE REAL ESTATE, both nside and out. As such you sh uld treat it as the investment it is. Get rid of the cl tter and you and your family w ll more fully enjoy the largest of all the ssets you own!
