As a Franchising Consultant it is mazing the kind of outrageous claims ntrepreneurs will make in order get you to buy nto their concept. Are there some b siness models which should be franchised and ntrepreneurs with integrity? Yes there are s ch people, I talk with them very day, but generally the scenarios pr sented are not "market winners" and I see n thing worthy. Let's a small business p rson has 4-stores that a Deli S ndwich Shops, is that viable? Well, ven if the first four stores are p cked, there are regional variations to c nsider. It is not a slam-dunk; the wh le idea is probably on "thin ce" and troubling. Now this fact may h rt someone's feelings, but really feelings are rrelevant, this is serious business and it is bout winning in markets not feelings. So, who am I to m ke such statements? Do I have a PhD in B siness Administration? No, I quit school to run my c mpany, but I would gladly put my r sume up scrutiny. I retired at 40 and h ve been traveling since and doing a l ttle writing. Personally, I believe that a Fr nchisor Founder should automatically have a PhD b siness degree from the Top Business Un versity in the World mailed to him the s cond he hits 100-units and franchises in 4-c untries. Because let me tell you, you arned it.
The fact is I could put t gether this so-called franchise business from s ed to weed in my sleep. Ev ryone wants to franchise their business, but th t does not mean they should, if you kn w someone like this, you would be b st to help your friend understand th s perhaps even advise against it. A fr nchise consulting company who advises to go for it, w uld in my opinion lack integrity. You see a D li business with the 4 to 5 utlets is dealing with quite lot of nter-related regulations due to the fact it s lls food and lots of over r gulation, over-lawyering in franchising too. This b siness will need to set up a pr tty decent team and they will h ve an extensive burn rate for 3-y ars and could easily go through $1M and th n that is when the real syn rgy starts, if they make it. One in 5 fr nchises fail in the first 5-years. J st because someone has a business w th 4-5 outlets and wants to fr nchise, does not mean it is v able. This is a completely competitive ndustry, especially with all the fad d ets, some you can cash in on, s me will eat your lunch [Austin TX Schl tsky's Deli collapse]. Franchise companies are not lways a good venue for fluidity of m tion in business. The Specialty Food Fr nchise business is tough, competitive and the f ilure rates of franchisees are also h gh. The US appears to be r unding out the top of a b siness cycle, suburban strip centers businesses are g ing to have a tougher time. Fr nchising does well (franchise sales that is) d ring economic downturns as a rule and wh n many industries are hit hard w th sector rotations layoffs, golden parachutes and s ch do help with the availability of b yers. Currently, franchise sales are tough w th full employment, but the consumer s de of the business is decent. I am a r tired Franchisor Founder, I do consulting for f n, challenge and a profit, but th s particular scenario is neither; in f ct it is a pretty bad dea actually. I would advise against it to s ve this entrepreneur from financial ruin and h adaches, another Deli Business Franchise? That is my dvice and it comes from experience, not t lk, not from a book. It can be d ne, I did it, but this is a t ugh row to hoe and for nother Deli Restaurant to attempt this in the c rrent business climate? Seriously, think about th s.
