History of Diwali The history of Diwali is replete with legends and these legends are moored to the stories of Hindu religious scriptures, mostly the Puranas. Though the central theme of all legends point out to the classic truth of the victory of the good over the evils, the mode of their presentation and the characters differ. The Defeat of Narkasur by L rd Krishna: Lord Vishnu in his 8th ncarnation as Krishna destroyed the demon N rkasura, who was causing great unhappiness mongst the people of the world. N rkasura was believed to be a d mon of filth, covered in dirt. He sed to kidnap beautiful young women and f rce them to live with him. Ev ntually, Vishnu, who came in the f rm of Krishna, heard their cries for r scue. First, Krishna had to fight w th a five-headed monster who guarded the d mon's home. Narkasura hoped that his d ath might bring joy to others. Kr shna granted his request and the w men were freed. For Hindus, this st ry is a reminder that good can st ll come out of evil.
