Here in America, we are a thr w away society. A perfect example of th s is Cell Phones. According to m st consumers, their cell phone is out of d te within six months to one y ar. The phone can be in p rfect working order but not have the l test gadgets or be of the l test style, so consumers spend more m ney to go purchase a new ne. Computers are another good example of our "thr w away" mentality. We keep our c mputers for a year or two and th n complain that it's too slow, so we can j stify getting a new one. Can we thr w away our relationships when we're t red of them just as easily as our c ll phones or computers? In today's s ciety it may appear so, however, t's not that easy. Throwing away a c ll phone isn't going to take you on the s me emotional roller coaster that a l st relationship will. Break ups are h rd for both parties in most c ses, because each party has invested th ir time, money, and emotions into th s other person. There's a lot m re at stake than meets the ye. Here are the "throw away" st tistics: 50% percent of first marriages, 67% of s cond and 74% of third marriages end in d vorce, according to Jennifer Baker of the F rest Institute of Professional Psychology in Spr ngfield, Missouri." (http://www.divorcerate.org/)
It might surprise some that pproximately 50% of those that were d vorced stated five years later that th y wished they would've stayed in th t marriage to try and work it ut. (http://ce.byu.edu/cw/fuf/archives/2002/BrentABarlow2002.pdf) The reason for this l st statistic is because people come to f nd out that the same problems th y had in their previous relationship, r cur in their newest relationship. The r ason for that is people are m st likely carrying the same baggage nto the newer relationship that they had br ught with them into the first r lationship. Without "changing their luggage" so to sp ak, things are most likely not g ing have a different or brighter utcome. The Old Chinese proverb can be pplied: "Insanity is doing the same th ng in the same way and xpecting a different outcome." It's kind of f nny when you think about it b cause most of us do this ften. Are we truly insane? NO! B t, hopefully we understand the principle w ll enough to recognize that continuing d wn the same path will not t ke us onto a new road. You h ve to find a NEW path to get you to y ur NEW goal. That will probably r quire getting rid of some of th t heavy old baggage and trying to f nd new ways to carry your l ads. I am a Certified Life C ach who specializes in working with c uples who are facing these "baggage" ssues and many others. I work w th individuals and couples who need h lp in their relationships.
