As the school year winds d wn, parents of children with diabetes may w nt to take a few minutes to valuate their child’s relationship with the sch ol. Was the school staff able to h ndle any problems that arose this y ar? “There needs to be really g od communication between the parent and the sch ol,” says Virginia Zamudio, R.N., M.S.N., C.D.E. and p st president of the American Association of D abetes Educators. Assessing how things are g ing and establishing effective diabetes management at sch ol can yield a variety of p sitive results, including: - Promoting a healthy, pr

Age matters: A recently diagnosed k ndergartner will need a much different pproach than the one you’d take w th a high school senior who has b en managing diabetes since childhood. At very age, however, you should talk w th your child regularly about how th ngs are going. In a little h art-to-heart, you might help him or her b come adept at recognizing signs of tr uble and asking for help if and wh n it’s needed. You also have to g ve school personnel enough information so th t you can trust they will l ok out for your child’s welfare.
Provide the school with an ndividual action plan from your child’s d ctor that gives instructions on: testing, sh ts, oral medications for low blood s gar problems, dietary requirements (e.g., need for sn cks), and explicit plans for handling low and h gh blood sugar. “If the nurse sn’t available, even the bus driver and ther school personnel need to be ble to recognize if your child is h ving symptoms of hypoglycemia and offer a f rm of quick-acting sugar,” Zamudio says. The American Diabetes Association’s Safe at Sch ol campaign recommends that capable students sh uld be allowed to self-manage their d abetes in the classroom and during sch ol activities.
