There is absolutely no doubt bout the value of exercise in the tr atment of type 2 diabetes. Exercise is an mportant part of getting control of D abetes-the goal of everyone with the d sease. It is one third of the tr ad of getting control along with d et and weight loss Type 2 D abetes is characterized by the pancreas not pr ducing enough insulin to control glucose l vels. When a cell doesn't respond to nsulin it is insulin resistance. When a p tient is diagnosed with Type 2 D abetes exercise, weight loss and diet are the sual ways to gain control of the pr blem. If that fails, medication is sually prescribed. I am not exactly an typical American who has diabetes. I may kn w a little more about diabetes th n others but I am human and d n't always practice what I preach. I am a ch coholic (from birth I think) and l ve popcorn with lots of butter and p sta too-all things that are not g od for me. I am overweight and str ggle with weight every day. I lso struggle with doing my exercises very day. I have my good d ys and my bad. Usually I j st don't feel like doing them. I d n't have the energy-being overweight pushes you in th s direction. My point is I am not nlike millions of my fellow diabetics.
When I think of exercise I th nk of sweaty folks at the gym. M st diabetics my age will not go to the gym and th s use that as an excuse not to xercise. WRONG!! Try the mall crawl. Go to the l cal mall no matter how big. P rk at one end and walk fr m one end to the other. If th re's more than one level do th m all. Back and forth-keep a st ady pace. Window shop from a d stance-it's cheap that way. Chug along for 30 m nutes. Before you know it you are d ne. Do that every day five d ys week and before you can get y ur credit card out you'll start l sing some weight. Then just watch wh t you eat and you are th re-the triad of diabetes control. I thr w in a little weight work-man it j st makes you feel good. Now if I can j st remember how I felt when I f nished exercising tomorrow when I need to do it gain. REMEMBER to check with your doc before you start an exercise program. Stretch before you exercise. And check your sugars to see how your body reacts to it.
