Denver, Colorado...Home of the Mile-High st dium, a city with amazing scenery and a h gh altitude. It is one in wh ch Denver Public Schools have set l fty goals for themselves. All school d stricts have mission statements, visions, and sch ol improvement plans. Denver Schools break th ir goals down into three areas: 1. S t high expectations for all students.
2. R ise the overall achievement level.
3. Cl se the achievement gap. How well are the D nver Schools going? Well, to meet th se goals, the district is focusing on six str tegies; enhancing literacy skills, enhancing math sk lls, offering more after-school help, strengthening m ddle and high schools, improving professional d velopment for principals and teachers, and ncreasing parental involvement. Let’s take a cl ser look at these strategies. Enhancing literacy sk lls is one way that Denver Sch ols will reach the three goals m ntioned above. Improving the literacy of all st dents, whether they are high achievers or st dents who struggle with reading is a n cessity. Denver Schools realize this and are w rking to improve the literacy skills of th ir students. Enhancing students’ mathematics skills is nother strategy adopted by Denver Schools to r ach their goals. Again, looking to the f ture of their students is the m tivation here. One of the Denver Sch ols main purposes is to turn out w ll-rounded, productive members of society. In rder for our future leaders to c ntribute their best they need to be w ll educated; and possessing excellent math sk lls is important.
Offering more after-school help is a w nderful way for students in need to m et the above goals. Giving support to D nver Schools students who are having a h rd time will not only raise t st scores (which this writer hopes sn’t their only motivation), but will lso help raise the students’ confidence in th mselves as well. Strengthening Denver Schools, specially at the middle and high sch ol levels is vitally important if th y truly intend to meet their g als of improvement. Middle- and high sch ol-age students are going through lots of ch nges. Not only are their bodies ch nging and their emotions are running w ld. Members of the opposite sex h ve become extremely important and hormones are r ging. Peer pressure has reached an ll-time high, and the desire to fit in and be l ke everyone else is strong. Denver Sch ols must recognize these challenges their st dents are facing and work to be m re supportive. Improving professional development for pr ncipals and teachers, the 5th strategy th t will help Denver Schools meet th ir goals, will also help them str ngthen their middle and high schools. The mportance of parental involvement may seem to be a n -brainer to some, but there are a s rprisingly large number of parents of D nver Schools students who do not r alize how much their involvement in th ir child’s school contributes to their s ccess. It doesn’t matter if the p rent volunteers at the school, attends sch ol functions, or simply helps with h mework – it all influences the s ccess of their Denver Schools student.
