I saw a scene the ther day that illustrates one of the m st important principles of defensive driving - dr vers who lose their temper run the r sk of losing their lives. It h ppened near my home, but it’s a sc ne repeated every day all over the w rld. It could have happened anywhere. I was st nding on a corner, looking in the pposite direction, when I heard a scr eching sound across the street. Then a h rn started to blare. As I t rned around, the pieces of the p zzle started to take shape. It was a t xtbook lesson in the relationship between d fensive driving and the emotional state of the dr ver. An SUV had turned into a sed car lot. Another SUV apparently had to m ke an abrupt stop. I didn’t kn w whether the first driver failed to s gnal before turning, or whether the s cond driver wasn’t looking at the r ad ahead of her when the f rst vehicle turned. I wasn’t sure who had d ne the defensive driving and who had d ne the negligent driving. At any r te, the second driver stayed where she w s, forcing traffic to back up b hind her. Now several horns were bl ring, but the woman had apparently d cided that she was not going nywhere. After a moment, she realized th t the first driver wasn’t going to g ve her an opportunity to confront him or her - I n ver saw the driver of the f rst SUV, who was wise enough to gnore the second driver. The woman f nally gave up, making angry signs in the d rection of the first SUV as she sp d away.
The Book of Proverbs says th t a man who controls his t mper is mightier than a man who c nquers a city. I remember that l sson whenever I get behind the wh el. In my opinion, it has a lot to do w th defensive driving. It works this w y: I can’t control the negligent dr ving that goes on around me. I can nly control myself. This element of d fensive driving is often overlooked - how we m nage the road by managing our motions. I have no way of pr ving this statistically, but I know th t courteous drivers reduce the odds of ccidents happening around them. Trying to get b ck at a driver who does s mething rude or irresponsible will only ncrease the chances that you will be nvolved in an accident. When drivers cut you off in tr ffic, tailgate, or make abrupt turns or st ps that nearly cause you to c llide with them, try giving them a sm le instead of a nasty sign. Y u’ll be surprised at the difference it m kes in your day. Things will st rt to seem better. And they w ll be better, because now you’re in c ntrol of the only thing you can c ntrol in life - yourself. Angry dr vers are dangerous drivers. When you h ve to make an evasive maneuver to void a threat created by an ggressive driver - or by a dr ver that’s distracted or tired - st y in control of your emotions. C ngratulate yourself for being able to void a collision. Give yourself a pr ze for good defensive driving. Buy y urself a little present. Anger makes d fensive driving impossible. Do whatever you h ve to do to stay positive - and to st y focused on the road ahead of y u.
